A password prevents an unauthorized person from using the computer.

You can use the password in one of two ways: at boot or in server mode.

USING A PASSWORD AS THE COMPUTER STARTS

If you select Boot when you create a user password, the following prompt
appears when you press the power or reset button:

  Please type the user password:

Type the user password, then press <Enter>.  No characters appear on
screen as you type, so other people cannot see the password.

If you do not enter the password correctly, the following message
appears.

  -Invalid Password-

In this case, retype the password.  If you do not enter the password
correctly after four attempts, you must restart the system before
trying again.

LOCKING THE KEYBOARD

If you select Boot when you create a user password, you can set the
keyboard so no one can use it, even though the computer is running.  To
do so, press <Ctrl+Alt+Scroll Lock>.

To re-enable the keyboard, press <Enter> to clear any keystrokes typed
on the locked keyboard.  Then type the password and press <Enter>.  If
you do not enter the user password correctly, the keyboard remains
disabled.  There is no limit to the number of times you can attempt to
enter the user password.

USING A PASSWORD IN SERVER MODE

If you select Server when you create a user password, the computer
completes the startup procedure and locks the keyboard each time you
turn on the power.  Enter the user password to use the system.

CREATING A USER PASSWORD

To create a user password, use System Setup (Page 10):

1.  From the Main Menu, select User Security.

2.  The Security menu appears; move the cursor to the User Password
    field.

3.  User the left or right arrow key to select a security option: Boot to
    enable the password at boot, or Server to enable the server mode.
    Then press <Enter>.

4.  The cursor moves to the Enter the Password field.  Type the password
    you want to use.  No characters appear on the screen as you type,
    follow these rules:

Create a password of one to eight characters.  If you type mode than
eight keystrokes and press <Enter>, the computer beeps, and you must
re-enter the password.  Use any combinations of letters and numbers.

The system distinguishes between numeric keys above the letter keys and
those in the numeric keypad at the right of the keyboard.  For instance,
if you enter a keypad 8 when enabling the password, you may not enter 8
above the letter keys to use the password.

The system does not distinguish between upper- and lowercase letters in a
password.  For instance, D is the same as d.

If you press an invalid key, the computer beeps, and you must reenter the
password.

If you make a mistake, use <Backspace> to erase the characters up to the
mistake, then retype the correct characters.

You cannot leave the Enter the Password field without establishing a
password.  If you begin to create a password and decide you do not want
to use it, finish creating it and then cancel it.  See section,
"Canceling a Password".

5.  When you finish typing, press <Enter>.  The cursor moves to the
    Verify field.  Reenter the password and press <Enter>.

If the passwords match exactly, the password is enabled.  If not the
computer beeps.  Press <Enter> again and repeat the process.

CHANGING A PASSWORD

To change a password, cancel the existing password and then create a
new one.  See "Canceling a Password".

To change between the boot and server types of password:

1.  From the Main Menu, select Security.

2.  The Security menu appears.  Move the cursor to the User Password
    field.

3.  Use the left or right arrow key to change the security option.  Then
    press <Enter>.

You do not need to set a different Password when you change the password
type.

CANCELING A PASSWORD

To cancel a password, use System Setup or the password jumper on the
system board.  To use System Setup:

1.  From the Main Menu, select Security.

2.  Move the cursor to the User Password field.

3.  Use the left or right arrow key to select None for the user
    password.  Then, press <Enter>.  The password is cancelled.

To re-enable a password, create it again following the procedure in
"Creating a User Password".

SETTING THE PASSWORD JUMPER

The password jumper allows you to disabled the password entered in System
Setup.  Set the jumper if you have forgotten a password or if you wish to
prevent other users from setting an unauthorized password.  While the
jumper is set, the System Setup Password is disabled, it he old password
is erased, and a new Password cannot be created.  When the jumper is
removed, you can set a password.

To set the password jumper:

1.  Turn the computer off, unplug the power cord, and disconnect all
    peripheral devices.  Remove the computer chassis cover.

NOTE:  Altering jumper setting while the computer is on can permanently
       damage the computer and its components.

To avoid accidental discharge of static electricity as you handle
components or jumpers, you can use a grounding wrist strap.  Static
electricity can damage computer components.

2.  Locate the jumper pins at locations E5 on the system board.  Set a
    jumper block on pins 1 and 2.

3.  Replace the computer-chassis cover.  Connect peripheral devices and
    the power cord.  Turn on the system.

Before establishing new passwords, repeat this procedure, but in step 2,
move the jumper from pins 1 and 2 to pin 2 only.
