POST Beep Codes Faxback Doc. # 3999 When you restart the computer, it performs Power On System Test (POST), during which it checks and initializes the system's internal components. If a serious error occurs, the computer does not display a message but emits a series of long and short beeps instead. The series always starts with three short beeps, followed by a series of long beeps, followed by another series of short beeps. The number of long beeps within the series indicates which components caused an error. More than one component can cause an error at the same time. The table below lists the codes by the number of the long beeps in the series. If you hear a beep code, record the number of beeps, and contact your Radio Shack store or participating dealer. Long Beeps* Check this Component 1 Processor 2 Flash BIOS loader 3 System board 4 System board 5 SIMM memory 6 Integrated VGA or video adapter 7 Expansion options * The number of short beeps does not matter in determining the component to check.
