DMP-204 (260-2883) Ribbon Faxback Doc. # 4249 Installing the Ribbon Cassette: Follow these steps to install the standard black ribbon cassette. CAUTION: * Printing without a ribbon damages the print head and the platen. * Before you replace the ribbon cassette, set POWER to OFF and unplug the printer. * When you turn off the printer, it loses any information stored in the buffer. (The buffer holds information the computer has sent but the printer has not printed.) 1. Open the printer cover. You might find installing a ribbon easier if you completely remove the printer cover. To remove the cover, raise it to a 45-degree angle and pull it away from the printer. 2. Remove the ribbon cassette from its protective bag. Tighten the ribbon by turning the ribbon feed knob in the direction shown by the arrow. 3. Slide the print head to the center of the paper bail. Then carefully thread the ribbon between the ribbon mask and the print head. 4. Position the left end of the cassette so the black ribbon feed spindle (the lower one, in black) slides into the hole on the underside of the ribbon feed knob. 5. Press down on the left side of the cassette until the cassette is straight. Then press down on the right side of the cassette until it snaps into place. 6. Pull the right side of the cassette back until the cassette is straight. Then press down on the right side of the cassette until it snaps into place. CAUTION: If the ribbon feed knob does not line up with the ribbon feed spindle, the cassette is not properly inserted. Do not force the cassette into place. Instead, remove the cassette and try again. 7. Tighten the ribbon by turning the ribbon feed knob in the direction show by the arrow. 8. If you removed the printer cover, replace it by holding it at a 45 -degree angle and sliding its grooves over the printer's tabs. Close the printer cover. When the print becomes light, replace the ribbon cassette with a standard black ribbon cassette (26-2871). To remove the old ribbon cassette, grasp the handle on the top of the cassette. Then gently pull it up. Installing the Optional Color Ribbon Cassette: Follow these steps to install the optional Color Ribbon Cassette 1. Set POWER to OFF and unplug the printer. 2. Temporarily remove the paper rack and open the printer cover. You might find installing a ribbon easier if you completely remove the cover. To remove the cover, raise it to a 45-degree angle and pull it away from the printer. 3. Remove the black ribbon cassette by grasping the handle on the top of the cassette and gently pulling it up. 4. Remove the ribbon cassette from its protective bag. Tighten the ribbon by turning the ribbon feed knob in the direction shown by the arrow. 5. Slide the print head to the center of the paper bail. Position the left end of the cassette so the color ribbon feed spindle slides into the hole on the underside of the ribbon feed knob. 6. Slide the color ribbon cassette's ribbon guide to the center of the exposed ribbon. Position the color ribbon cassette as shown, and put the ribbon roller guide over the print head. 7. Lower the cassette into the printer. Be sure the ribbon fits between the print head and ribbon mask. 8. Fit the pins on both ends of the cassette into the corresponding notches in the printer. Push the cassette down until it clicks into place. CAUTION: If the ribbon feed knob does not line up with the ribbon feed spindle, the cassette is not properly inserted. Do not force the cassette into place. Instead, remove the cassette and try again. 9. Tighten the ribbon by turning the feed knob in the direction shown by the arrow. Note: The color ribbon shifts up and down to select the printing color. 10. If you removed the printer cover, replace it by holding it at a 45-degree angle and sliding its grooves over the printer's tabs. Close the printer cover and replace the paper rack. Note: When the print becomes light, replace the ribbon cassette with an optional Color Ribbon Cassette (26-2900). Follow these guidelines when you replace the ribbon cassette. * Before you replace the ribbon cassette, set POWER to OFF and unplug the printer. Note: When you turn off the printer, it loses any information stored in the buffer. * To remove the old color ribbon cassette, lift its left side to avoid damaging the ribbon cassette holder. Adjusting the Color Ribbon Position: If you notice a color misalignment after you run the color self test, rotate the adjustment shaft. * If the upper part of the black line of the self test has cyan, the ribbon cassette is too low: rotate the adjustment shaft toward the back of the printer. * If the black line lacks the bottom part, the ribbon cassette position is too high: rotate the shaft toward the front of the printer.
