DMP 2120 (260-2811) Ribbon Faxback Doc. # 4617 Ribbon Installation/Replacement Note: The Color Ribbon (260-2835) has been discontinued. The Black Ribbon Refill (260-2836) has been discontinued. Use the Black Ribbon Cartridge (260-2834) for ribbon replacement. If the ribbon cartridge is already installed, simply check to see that it is properly threaded between the head mask and the print head. If the ribbon cartridge is not installed, or if you need to replace it due to excessive wear, faint printing, or another problem, follow this proced- ure: 1. Take the printer off line or set the power switch to OFF. NOTE: When you turn the power OFF, any data stored in the printer's buffer is lost. To prevent loss of data when changing the ribbon, take the printer off line, and do not turn off the power. 2. Open the front cover. 3. If power is off, move the print head to the center of the print line. 4. If necessary, lift the ribbon cartridge toward you to release the lock, and take out the used ribbon cartridge. 5. Pull the transportation tab out of the new ribbon cartridge. After remov- ing the transportation tab, handle the ribbon cartridge carefully to prevent the ribbon from twisting. 6. Grasp the ribbon release between your thumb and forefinger, and push in the direction of the arrows to close the ribbon drive rollers. 7. Rotate the ribbon feed knob in a clockwise direction to tighten the ribb- on. 8. Pull the copy control lever toward you, to position D. 9. Push down on the front side of the ribbon cartridge support frame to be sure it is in its "up" position. 10. Insert the ribbon cartridge's left and right mounting pins into the guide notches of the side frame. Push the cartridge forward while pivoting it on the mounting pins, then snap it into place. 11. Thread the ribbon through the ribbon guide shafts on the print head. NOTE: Do not allow the ribbon to touch the print head guide shaft which might stain the ribbon with grease. 12. Set the copy control lever to the correct position, and tighten the ribbon again. Close the front cover. CHANGING RIBBON REFILL Note: Ribbon refills have been discontinued. The ribbon refill consists of only a ribbon in a paper case. Use a four-color ribbon refill in a four-color cartridge or a black ribbon refill in a black ribbon cartridge. The black refill can be replaced up to five times, and the four-color refill can be replaced up to four times. The ribbon cartridge has an instruction label for recording the number of refill replacements. Circle a number each time you replace a ribbon refill. When the highest number has been circled, replace the entire ribbon cartridge. The procedures for exchanging refills, are virtually the same for four-color and black ribbons, except that the black ribbon is twisted half a turn to form a dual track ribbon and lengthen the ribbon life. 1. Unlock the four catches, one by one, in the direction of the arrow. 2. Open the cartridge cover. 3. Pull the rubber roller in the direction of the arrow until it clicks; then lift and remove the used ribbon from the cartridge. 4. Carefully set a new refill in the ribbon cartridge. Tear and remove the paper tape indicated. 5. While gently holding thee case in place, pull out the tab inserted in the case. 6. Carefully arrange the ribbon along the ribbon path. 7. Slowly lift the refill case out of the cartridge. 8. Unlock the ribbon release knob in the direction of the arrow. 9. Turn the ribbon feed knob clockwise two or three times to check the ribbon feed operation. 10. Close the cartridge cover, and circle the number of refill replacements on the label. BLACK RIBBON 1.
