LP 990 (260-2879) Loading Paper Faxback Doc. # 4673 You can select one of two paper-feeding methods: automatic or manual feed. When you select automatic feed, you can load paper in the paper tray or in the manual-feed slot. When you select manual feed, you must load paper in the manual feed slot. CAUTION: Store paper flat and in a dry place. SELECTING THE PAPER-FEEDING METHOD Automatic Feed: The printer is set at the factory to automatically load paper from the paper tray. This is the most convenient paper-feeding method for standard 16 to 20 pound paper. NOTE: If the paper tray is removed or empty when you turn on the printer, PAPER OUT TRAY appears on the display. MANUAL FEED: For thicker paper, transparency file, envelopes, and non-stand- ard paper sizes, select the manual-feed method and manually load one sheet at a time through the manual-feed slot. See "Menu Settings" for information about changing the paper-feeding method and specifying the manual-feed paper size. NOTES: * If you select manual feed and send the print command before you load paper in the manual-feed slot, the printer's display shows FEED=LETTER to remind you that you must load paper in the manual-feed slot. (The factory -set manual-feed paper size is letter-size.) * When you select manual feed, the MANUAL indicator lights and MF appears on the display. USING THE PAPER TRAY The supplied letter-size paper tray holds up to 250 sheets of standard weight (16 to 20 pound) paper. You can order additional paper trays for other paper sizes through your local Radio Shack store. CAUTION: Before you use the tray, be sure you remove the packing tape that holds down the metal pressure plate. Follow these steps to use the paper tray. 1. Lift the paper tray and pull it out of the printer. 2. Push down the tray's metal pressure plate until it locks into place in the bottom of the tray. 3. Fan the edges of the paper and stack it to ensure even feeding. Then, place the paper in the tray as follows: * Be sure the side you want to print on is face down and the top of the paper (letterhead, for example) is under the metal tabs. * Do not load paper above the red, maximum-height line. * Be sure the corners of the paper fit under the tray's metal corner tabs. Then, gently shake the paper tray to straighten the paper. 4. Slide the paper tray into the printer until it locks into place. USING THE MANUAL FEED SLOT Use the manual-feed slot when you want to do either of the following: * Load a single sheet of paper without removing the paper tray. In this case, load the paper in the manual-feed slot before you send the print command. It is not necessary to select the manual-feed option to load standard paper in the manual-feed slot. * Print on media other that standard 16 to 20 pound paper, such as transparency film, thicker paper, and envelopes. In this case, you must select manual-feed option and specify the manual-feed paper size. See "Menu Settings." To use the manual-feed slot, insert the paper lengthwise with the top of the paper (letterhead, for example) next to the printer and the side you want to print on facing up. The printer pulls the paper in the rest of the way. To avoid wrinkling envelopes or thicker paper, open and fold down the face-up tray before you print. See "Selecting the Collection Tray." SELECTING THE COLLECTION TRAY When you use software that prints in last-to-first order, open and fold down the face-up tray. Also, use the face-up tray when you print on thicker paper or envelopes. The face-up tray holds up to 30 sheets of paper. If you do not open the face-up tray, the paper feeds into the face-down collection tray on top of the printer. USING FORM FEED When you use most software, the printer automatically prints all the information sent by the computer and ejects the paper. If your software does not do this, the DATA indicator blinks to show that information remains in the printer's buffer. Follow these steps to print the information remaining in the printer's buf- fer. 1. Press ONLINE so that the ONLINE indicator turns off. 2. Press FORM FEED. The ONLINE indicator lights again. The DATA indicator lights steadily while the information prints and turns off after it prints. PRINTABLE AREA Normally, the printed page has the margins you set through your software. However, the printer does not print all the way to the edges of the paper. The printed page has minimum margins of about 3/16 - 5/16 inch. If the margins you set through your software are smaller than the minimum margins, the printed page might not look like your computer screen. For example, the information at the end of a line might wrap to the next line. (smm 07/27/93)
