LP 990 (260-2879) Using the Laser Printer Faxback Doc. # 4680 PREPARING YOUR COMPUTER Before you can print the documents you create on your computer, you must prepare your computer by completing the procedures described in this sect- ion. BASIC OPERATION This section provides basic printing instructions. STEPS FOR PRINTING Follow these steps to print. Each step is described in detail later in this section. 1. Turn on the printer. 2. Be sure the printer is online. If the ONLINE indicator is off, press ON- LINE so that the indicator lights. For details, see "Setting the Printer On/Offline" later in this section. 3. Load paper in the paper tray or manual-feed slot. For details, see "Loading Paper" later in this section. 4. Select the correct printer driver and specify the desired printing information through your software. Then, send the print command from your software. For details, see the user's manual for your software. The DATA indicator lights. When the printer receives a full page of information, it prints and ejects the page. If a page contains font changes or graphics, this might take several minutes. After the printer prints all the information, the DATA indicator turns off. If the DATA indicator flashes, some information has not printed; see "Using Form Feed." To turn off the printer, set the power switch to off (O). For more information, see "Turning Off the Printer" later in this section. When you turn on your printer, WARMING UP briefly appears on the printer's display. Then, the ONLINE and READY indicators light and READY [LJ2] T appears on the display with READY flashing. After about 60 seconds, READY stops flashing, and the printer is ready for use. NOTE: If you select an emulation mode other than HP LaserJet Series II, an abbreviation for that emulation mode appears inside the brackets instead of [LJ2]. If you select the manual-feed paper-feeding option through the printer's menu settings, MF appears instead of T. When you turn off the printer, it clears any information sent by the computer--including information stored in the buffer, any printing informat- ion specified through software, and any downloaded fonts. CAUTION: When you turn off the printer, wait at least 15 seconds before you turn it back on. SETTING THE PRINTER ON/OFFLINE The printer must be online to print. To set the printer online, press ON- LINE so that the ONLINE indicator lights. Some procedures, such as changing the menu settings, requires that you set the printer offline. To set the printer offline, press ONLINE so that the indicator turns off. (smm 07/24/93)
