1200 BPS Internal Modem (250-1013) Setup Faxback Doc. # 4748 INSTALLATION ON A PC-COMPATIBLE PRELIMINARY PROCEDURES 1) WARNING: TURN OFF ALL EQUIPMENT. If any unit is on, you can damage the central processing unit or the board. Wait at least 10 seconds before removing or inserting any board into the computer. 2) To avoid static electricity buildup, which can destroy certain integrated circuits, touch a grounded metal object before handling any circuit board. Do not stand on a carpeted floor while installing this board. 3) Remove the 2 screws on the front of the main unit. Remove the cover by sliding it away from the rear of the unit, parallel to the computer. 4) Before installing the PC Modem, set the four options switches to meet your installation requirements. 1200 BAUD PC MODEM 1) To install the PC Modem, rotate the chassis so that the back of the computer faces you. Select any empty socket as the location for the PC-Modem. It makes no difference which you use. 2) Remove the sheet-metal screw from the top of the selected cover. Tilt the metal strip away from you and lift the strip so the tab on the panel clears the bottom of the slot. Store the cover in a safe place for future replacement. 3) Discharge any static buildup by touching a grounded metal object. Now grasp the PC Modem by its upper edges and position it above the black edge-connector socket. Insert the lower tab on the board's mounting bracket into the slot on the rear of the chassis, in the same way the option slot covers are mounted. At the same time, apply even downward pressure engaging the edge-connector into its socket. Align the entire card so that the U-shaped cutout on the top of the option card is positioned over the screw-hole on the rear of the chassis. Replace the screw you removed before and tighten it to secure the board. Do not overtighten the screw. 4) Replace the top cover, securing it with the screws previously removed. 5) There are two modular phone connectors on the rear panel of the PC Modem. Connect one end of the modular phone cable supplied with the modem into either of these two jacks. These jacks are identical; it does not matter which one you use. Connect the other end of this modular cable into your wall jack. The PC Modem is now ready for use. Note: The second jack on the back of the PC Modem can be used to connect your standard telephone. This is provided for your convenience. You may plug your telephone into this jack and continue to use it normally. The PC Modem can be left connected even when your computer is turned off. It will not affect the normal use of your phone. (dkh-07/28/93)
