2400 BPS External Modem (250-3026) Software Faxback Doc. # 5034 Software Information: Most modem users will use data communications software to operate the modem; that is, to send data from the computer to the modem and vice-versa. Most communications software goes well beyond this point. For example, software with "file transfer" capability is capable of sending a file from your computer to another computer. Your modem can be controlled without communications software by using AT commands. For example, you might use AT commands when using the modem with a terminal or other device that does not have the capability to run software. In this case, the modem would directly control the basic functions required to take the outgoing data from the serial port of your computer and send the incoming data through the serial port to be displayed on the monitor screen, the simplest form of modem communications. The documentation for this modem refers to the use of AT commands to affect certain modem operating parameters and to save a particular configuration to non-volatile memory. If you need information about AT commands beyond what is provided in this manual, consult your software manual or the dealer from whom you purchased this modem. Setting up your Communications Software: Install your communications software according to the instructions that came with the program. Some programs do not come with printed manuals but contain the manual on disk. The first time you use your communications software, you will probably need to tell the software which serial port the modem is using (typically "COM1" or "COM2"). You may also be asked to select the "modem type" from a menu. If you don't see this modem listed by name on the menu, select "Hayes Smartmodem 2400B", or another Hayes-compatible 2400 baud modem.
