2400 BPS Internal Modem (250-1034) Features Faxback Doc. # 5050 The Tandy Error Correcting 2400-BPS Modem is a communications device that adds all the features your computer needs to communicate with other computers accessible by standard telephone. This Hayes V-series compatible modem is a valuable tool that can save you time and money in sending vital business information, keeping in touch with news events, ordering store merchandise without moving from your chair, or just passing messages to a friend. Best of all, you do not have to be a computer whiz to use your modem. This manual explains all that you need to know to set up and use the modem. To install your modem, refer to the instructions provided in Faxback Document # 5051. The Quick Start section provides you the basics of modem operation, with additional details provided in the "Basic Commands" section. Advanced operating elements are referenced in Faxback Document # 5049. The rest of the appendices provide information about your modem such as troubleshooting and technical specifications, for the more advanced user. Technical terminology is included in the glossary. MODEM FEATURES Your modem comes with these features: * Operates eight times faster than a 300 bps modem. * Automatically dials, answers, and disconnects calls. * Operates in the Hayes V-series and CCITT V.42 protocol modes and uses the standard Hayes AT command set. * Stores two sets of configuration parameters and four phone numbers * Lets you connect to the modem at 9600 baud, then have the modem determine the actual communications rate (300,1200,2400 or more). * Enables you to monitor the dialing and data communication progress with the built-in speaker. * Permits unattended operation of your computer when connected to a tele- phone so you or others can access the computer. This lets your perform a wide range of telecommunications applications. Your modem includes two advanced features: * Error control * Data compression Both features are enabled automatically when you communicate with another modem (such as Hayes V-series modem) that is compatible with these features. When your modem communicates with the other (remote) modem over regular phone lines, noise or other conditions can cause errors in data transmission. Your modem's error-control capability ensures accurate communication by con- tinually checking received data for errors. If your modem detects an error, it sends a command to the remote modem that the faulty block can be retrans- mitted. Your modem can also increase the effective transmission speed by compressing data, so that the modem can send it more efficiently. For more information on error-correcting and compression, see "Understanding Error-Control/Data Compression," in Appendix C. (smm 08/26/93)
