40 MB Internal Hard Drive (250-4057) Initilization Faxback Doc. # 5071 The 40 MB Internal Hard Disk Drive is a non-standard drive (as defined on page 29 of the Tandy 3000 Operation and Installation Manual). Use the following procedure to initialize your hard disk drive. This procedure is valid only for the 40 MB Internal Hard Disk Drive. Do not use this procedure for any other hard disk drive. Depending on the version of BIOS ROM you have, boot up the Utilities diskette no initialize the hard disk. To find out which version your system is using, perform the following steps: 1. Be sure you equipment is connected properly. 2. Turn on the computer. The screen displays: BIOS ROM version xx.xx.xx Copyright (C) 1985, 1986, 1987 and Phoenix Technologies, Ltd. All Rights Reserved. Licensed to Tandy Corp. 3. Look at the numbers on the right side of the first line to determine the version of BIOS ROM your system has. Follow the appropriate instructions below to initial your hard disk. BIOS ROM VERSION EARLIER THAN 01.01.00 1. Boot the Utilities diskette. The utilities menu appears. To choose the Setup utility, type: 4 [ENTER]. 2. Answer the prompts for your system parameters. When the Setup utility prompts you for the drive type of Fixed disk Drive C (D for a secondary hard disk drive), type: 3 [ENTER]. 3. After you complete the setup, reboot the Utilities diskette. The utilities menu re-appears. To choose the Format Hard Disk utility, type: 5 [ENTER]. 4. When prompted for the hard disk to format, type C [ENTER] for the primary hard disk or D [ENTER] for the secondary hard disk. Type Y [ENTER] to continue. 5. When the Format Hard Disk utility displays the hard disk parameters (drive type 3, 6 heads, 615 cylinders) and asks you whether they are correct, type N [ENTER]. When prompted for the correct parameters, enter the number of heads and cylinders shown on the "Factory Detected" error map that comes with your hard disk drive. Use the default interleave factor. 6. After you correct the parameters and flag any defective tracks, press [ENTER] to begin the format. BIOS ROM VERSION GREATER THAN 01.01.00 1. Boot the Utilities diskette. The utilities menu appears. To choose the Setup utility, type: 4 [ENTER]. 2. Answer the prompts for your system parameters. When the Setup utility prompts you for the drive type of Fixed Disk Drive C (D for a secondary hard disk drive), type: 39 [ENTER]. 3. After you complete the setup, reboot the Utilities diskette. The utilities menu reappears. To choose the Format Hard Disk utility, type: 5 [ENTER]. 4. When prompted for the hard drive to format, type C [ENTER] for the primary hard disk or D [ENTER] for the secondary hard disk. Type Y [ENTER] to continue. 5. When the Format Hard Disk utility displays the hard disk parameters (drive type 39, 6 heads, 820 cylinders) and asks you whether they are correct, type N [ENTER]. When prompted for the correct parameters, enter the number of heads and cylinders shown on the "Factory Detected" error map that comes with your hard disk drive. 6. Flag any defective tracks and press [ENTER] to begin the format. When the format is complete, you can follow the normal procedure to install an operating system on your hard disk drive. Refer to your operating system documentation for instructions. NOTE: MS-DOS Versions earlier than 03.30 are limited to a maximum hard disk partition size of 32 MB. To use all 40 megabytes of storage on your hard disk drive, you must use the MLFORMAT and MLPART commands and the MLPART. SYS device driver.
