440 MB SCSI Hard Drive (250-4167) Installation Faxback Doc. # 5134 INSTALLATION IN A TYPE A CHASSIS The Type A chassis has a 5 1/4" drive bay on the underside of the carriage. Install the drive in the 5 1/4" bay as described in the following procedure. Type A Chassis, 5 1/4" Drive Bay 1. Open the computer to gain access to the 5 1/4" drive bay in the carriage. 2. Slide the drive into the 5 1/4" drive bay. Align the appropriate mounting holes on the drive with the three mounting holes on the bottom of the carriage. Be sure the drive does not extend beyond the front of the carriage. NOTE: Connect the cable to the drive before of after you slide the drive into the drive bay. Refer to the "Completing the Installation" section for cable connection information. 3. Secure the drive, using three machine screws. INSTALLATION IN A TYPE B CHASSIS In a Type B chassis, install the drive in one of the 5 1/4" drive bays. Type B Chassis, 5 1/4" Drive Bay To install the drive into the 5 1/4" drive bay: 1. Determine which 5 1/4" drive bay you will be using: If the drive is the first hard disk drive in the system, install it in the lower 5 1/4" drive bay. If the drive is the second hard disk drive, install it in the upper 5 1/4" drive bay. 2. Remove the appropriate drive rails (upper or lower set) from the drive tower. 3. Using four machine screws, attach the drive rails and metal grounding clips to the drive as illustrated. 4. Slide the drive into the 5 1/4" drive bay until the rails lock into place. NOTE: Connect the cable to the drive before or after you slide the drive into the drive bay. Refer to the "Completing the Installation" section for cable connection information. INSTALLATION IN A TYPE C CHASSIS In a Type C chassis, the drive can be installed in the upper or lower 5 1/4" drive bay. Determine which 5 1/4" drive bay you should use: If the drive is the first hard disk drive in the system, install it in the lower 5 1/4" drive bay. If the drive is the second hard disk drive, install it in the upper 5 1/4" drive bay. For easy drive installation in the lower drive bay, you can remove the drive tower. Removing the drive tower is not necessary when mounting the drive in the upper 5 1/4" drive bay. To remove the drive tower: 1. Locate any cables attached to the internal drives, and disconnect them. 2. Detach the CMOS RAM battery from the Velcro strip on the side of the drive tower. 3. Remove the four screws that secure the tower to the bottom of the computer chassis and the three screws that secure it to the front of the chassis. 4. Carefully lift the drive tower up and out of the system unit. TYPE C CHASSIS, LOWER 5 1/4" DRIVE BAY To install the drive in the lower 5 1/4" bay: 1. Attach two shock isolators on each side of the drive. 2. Slide the drive into the lower 5 1/4" bay. If a device is installed in the upper 5 1/4" bay, be sure that the drive does not slide against it. Use the four machine screws provided with the computer to fasten the drive to the drive tower. NOTE: Connect the cable to the drive before or after you slide the drive into the drive bay. Refer to the "Completing the Installation" section for cable connection information. 3. If you removed the drive tower, re-install it now. Be sure that no cables are under the drive tower when you replace it. Re-attach the CMOS RAM battery to the Velcro strip on the side of the drive tower. TYPE C CHASSIS, UPPER 5 1/4" DRIVE BAY To install the drive in the upper 5 1/4" bay: 1. Install the four grommets into the mounting holes in the upper 5 1/4" drive bay. 2. Slide the drive into the upper 5 1/4" drive bay, being sure that it does not slide against any other devices. Use the four shoulder screws to fasten the drive to the drive tower. NOTE: Connect the cable to the drive before or after you slide the drive into the drive bay. Refer to the "Completing the Installation" section for cable connection information. COMPLETING THE INSTALLATION To complete the installation, connect the drive to the drive interface, using the cable supplied with the computer. 1. Attach one end connector of the drive cable to the drive connector on the SCSI adapter. NOTE: The connectors on the cable are keyed so that they connect only one way Do not force the connection. The cable has a colored stripe to indicate Pin 1 2. Attach the other end connector to the drive. If you have two SCSI drives installed, attach the inside connector to one of the drives. 3. Locate the power supply; several power cables extend from it. Connect a power cable to the drive. 4. Install any other internal options that you are adding at this time. Then, carefully replace the computer cover, and secure it with the screws you removed previously. 5. Reconnect all peripheral cables to the appropriate connectors on the back of the computer. 6. Reconnect the power cord. (abo-07/30/93)
