To change any of these settings, use the format function. See "Format" in the "Text Issues" section. HOT ZONE As the print head moves toward the end of a line, a beep sounds to warn you that the right margin is approaching. The area of a line between this beep and the right margin is called the hot zone. The default setting is eight spaces. If you want to change this setting, see "Format" in the "Text Issues" section. You can find the margin and tab positions on paper by using these scales. If you want to change the margins or tabs, see "Set New Margin" or "Set Tab Stops." MICRO SPACE When filling out a form, you might need to type a character in a box. With whole spaces, it is often difficult to fit a single character within a small box. To move the print head to the right by only a fraction of a space - 1/16 space in pica (10 pitch) or 1/5 space in elite (12 pitch) - press CODE + SPACE BAR (MICRO SPACE). A high-pitched beep sounds. A [down arrow] appears in the status area above the line corre- sponding to SPELL WD. Spell check regards a group of letters as a word if followed by SPACE BAR, -, <ΔΩ, TAB, a number, or a non-letter symbols besides a single period or apostrophe. When spell check finds a period or an apostrophe, it does not automatically consider the group of letters preceding it as a word. Instead, it looks beyond the special character to see if other letters are part of the word, such as an s after the apostrophe (rabbit's) or a file name extension after the period (file.doc). Type text as usual. If you type a word that is not in the main dictionary or the user dictionary, a high-pitched beep sounds as soon as you end that word. Correct the error, or you can use the dictionary function to display some suggested spellings of a word or to add a word to the user dictionary. See "Dictionaries." The [up arrow] or [down arrow] in the status area disappears. SWITCHING TO/FROM TYPEWRITER MODE Press WP/TYPE to switch to typewriter mode. The typewriter mode screen appears and the print head automatically moves to the left margin. (Text in the word processor's work memory remains there while you are in typewriter mode.) As you type, each character is immediately printed. The line you are currently typing appears at the bottom of the screen. When the print head returns to the left margin, the line disappears from the screen and the next line appears as you type. Any time you move to the next line or to one of the preceding lines, text disappears from the screen and the paper moves up or down according to the cursor keys you press. Press WP/TYPE to switch between word processor mode and typewriter mode. Many of the features available in word processor modes are also avail- able in typewriter mode. For example, the cursor keys move the print head and the paper, not just the cursor. (See "Switching to/from Typewriter Mode.") In addition, if you make a typing error, you can correct the error, even though characters have already been printed. (See "Correct and Error" and "Correct Manually.") To find out more about these and other typewriter mode features, refer to this section. Press WP/TYPE again to exit the typewriter mode and return to the pre- vious text screen in word processor mode. To exit the typewriter mode and re- turn to the menu screen, press MENU. While the synonyms are on the display, you can press [down arrow] to show the synonyms of the next definition or press [up arrow] to show the synonyms of the preceding definition. Press CODE + T (THES) to return to the definition lines. Press CODE + T (THES) again to exit the thesaurus function and return to the typewriter mode screen. If you found a word and type the new word. If the new word is too long to fit in the space left by the original word, delete the entire line; then type the line again using the new word. UNDERLINE TEXT To underline all characters as you type (including spaces), press CODE + - (XXX). The pitch setting number in the status area is underlined to remind you that the underline function is on. Press CODE + - (XXX) again or press -> to turn off the underline func- tion.
