40 MB Smartdrive (250-4119) Daisy Chain Faxback Doc. # 5201 Multiple Drives Hardware required to Daisy Chain: SmartDrive, Ribbon Cable with 3-40 Pin (IDE) connectors, and two J-4 jumpers. Some versions of this drive sold by other companies cannot be daisy chained (have more than one drive). Find the model number tag on the drive's top cover. If the "PCBA" number has a "02" in it you cannot add the "Optional" drive. *NOTE* Do not daisy chain SmartDrives with other type drives such as the "ST506" style Hard Drive or any HardCard. Jumpers will need to be installed on BOTH the PRIMARY (first) drive and the SLAVE (secondary) drive. SMARTDRIVE J4 JUMPER PRIMARY/MASTER DRIVE 5-6 JUMPERED OPTIONAL/SLAVE DRIVE 1-2 JUMPERED If you have data on the first (primary) SmartDrive, it is recommended that a full backup of all data be performed prior to proceeding with this section. Compatibility problems may exist when using different operating systems (MS-DOS versions) to setup the SLAVE drive. If this is true, you will need to back-up your data (on primary drive) and re-install with same Operating system version for both drives. DAISY CHAIN MOUNTING/CABLE PROCEDURES: 1. Disconnect power and all other cables from the computer. Remove computer's cover. 2. Install 5.25" bracket assembly AXX-7004 (if required). 3. Position drive in mounting slot. Connect 40 pin ribbon cable to J1. Ensure cable's COLOR STRIPE lines up with pin 1 on the drive (colored stripe designates pin 1) of all three (J1) cable connections. Primary Drive should be attached to the center 40 pin connector and secondary drive should connect to the last 40 pin connector at the end of ribbon cable. 4. Plug in power cables (white 4 pin). 5. Neatly tuck the cables out of the way. Reinstall the computer's cover and reattach all cables. DAISY CHAIN DRIVE NON-ROM DESIGNATION: DRIVE 1 (Master) C:=Primary (old C: files) E:=Extended DRIVE 2 (Slave) D:=Primary (old D: files) F:=Extended NOTE: Existing drive D: files are not affected. They are simply assigned a new drive designator. NOTE: On ROM based systems Drive D: will be the ROM F: will be Master drive extended partition G: will be Slave drive extended partition. NOTE: MS-DOS 3.2 defaults last physical drive as F: MS-DOS 3.3 defaults last physical drive as H: To create extended physical drive capabilities the following must be added to the config.sys file: LASTDRIVE=M. This would give logical drives "A thru M" for drive designation. DAISY CHAIN AND FDISK: Insert your MS-DOS diskette in drive A: and reboot system. At A: prompt type "FDISK" At the main menu of "FDISK" select "Next Fixed Disk Drive". You may now follow the standard fdisk procedures. SEE FDISK in your MSDOS manual (dtc-07/28/93)
