INSTALLING THE INTERFACE AND DRIVE

1. Turn the computer off and unplug the power cord from the wall.

2. If another hard disk controller is present, it must be kept from 
   responding to the addresses 1F0 through 1F7. Consult the controller's 
   operator's manual for information on address disabling.

3. Refer to the Interface Board Jumper Configuration Table 
   (Faxback Doc. #5214).

4. Install the Interface Board in any available AT slot. Note that in most 
   AT systems, the motherboard has both AT and XT type slots.

5. Connect the supplied 40 pin cable to both the SmartDrive and the interface 
   board, making sure that pin 1 on the interface board is connected to pin 1 
   on the SmartDrive.

6. Attach power to the SmartDrive power connector.

7. Power on the system, boot from your system utilities disk and run the 
   setup program to set the proper hard drive type in the system 
   configuration memory.

8. After running the setup program, boot from your MS-DOS diskette and run 
   FDISK to configure the hard disk partitions.

9. Return to MS-DOS. Type FORMAT C: /S /V to format and verify the drive, 
   transfer system files, and enter a volume name. Remove your floppy disk 
   and reboot your system. The screen will now display a C> prompt.
