9600 BPS Faxmodem (250-3030) Replacing the Fuse Faxback Doc. # 5235 If you have an external fax/modem that stops working and the LEDs do not go ON, first perform the suggested troubleshooting procedures in Chapter 11. If the fax/modem still does not work after you have followed those pro- cedures, you may need to replace the external fax/modem's fuse using the instructions in this document. REMOVING THE EXTERNAL FAX/MODEM COVER To remove the external fax/modem cover: >Place the fax/modem upside-down on a table in front of you. >Locate and remove the four screws shown in Figure D-1. >Holding the entire fax/modem together with your hands, turn it right- side up again and place it on its feet. >Lift the top of the fax/modem straight up and off. >There is no need to remove the circuit board from the baseplate. >The fuse is located on the component side of the board. CHECKING THE FUSE Look at the fuse. There should be one continuous wire connected from one end of the fuse to the other end, resembling the fuse on the left in Figure D-3. If the fuse resembles the "blown" fuse on the right, you must replace it. If the fuse is good, and you have performed all the troubleshooting suggestions in Chapter 11, the AC power cube may be faulty. REMOVING THE OLD FUSE To remove the old fuse, put a small screwdriver under the glass part of the fuse and pry it upwards from the two end clips. If you don't have a screwdriver, a pencil will work. Just push the sharpened end under the glass part of the fuse until the fuse is pushed out from the clips. REPLACING THE FUSE To insert a new fuse, push it back into the clips where you removed the "blown" fuse. Use an International-type fuse, 5 x 20mm, 2 amps. It is preferable to use a normal, fast-acting fuse, such as Radio Shack Catalog #270-1244, rather that a "slow-blow" fuse. REPLACING THE EXTERNAL FAX/MODEM COVER After installing a new fuse, replace the external fax/modem cover and re-install the four screws. >Lay the fax/modem cover on its back. >If necessary, re-insert the front lens into the cover. >Holding the circuit board and baseplate securely, turn them upside-down and place them onto the fax/modem cover. >Re-insert the four screws into the bottom of the fax/modem.
