CDR-1000 (250-1077) Troubleshooting Faxback Doc. # 5272 Your CDR-1000 is designed to give you many hours of trouble free service. If problems occur, most of them can be traced to incorrect software installation. If you are having trouble with our CDR-1000, please check the following items before you contact your nearby Radio Shack Computer Center: The CD-ROM does not operate. * Check the power cable connection. * Check the ribbon cable connections between the adapter interface and the CD-ROM drive. * Check that the disc's label is facing up. * Be sure the drive is pushed in fully. * Compare the config.sys file address setting and the adapter interface DIP switch setting - they must be set to the same address. * If you are using DMA, make sure the DMA channel specified in the MTMCDD.SYS driver in the config.sys file is identical to the DMA jumper setting on the adapter interface. * If the CD-ROM drive has been moved from a cold environment to a warm one, condensed moisture might be on the lens. Leave the CD-ROM drive turned off for about one hour before you use it. * Make sure you have selected the correct CPU speed for the /S:n parameter in the config.sys file. Not Enough Memory appears on the screen. * Reduce the number of buffers and unused files in the config.sys file. * Specify a lesser number for the /M:n parameter in the MSCDEX.EXE and MTMCDD.SYS/MTMCDS.SYS device driver. NO sound comes from the speaker. * Check the coaxial cable connections between the adapter interface and the CD-ROM drive. * Check the connections between the adapter interface audio output jacks and your audio amplifier/receiver. While the CD-ROM drive is turned on, no sound comes from the speaker(s) or headphones. * Be sure the disc you install is an audio disc. * Check your Audio Play program. PRECAUTIONS FOR USE Sudden shock or vibration applied to the CD-ROM drive during operation can cause the drive to stop operation. When you move the CD-ROM drive, be sure that no disc is in the drive. Otherwise the disc and drive might be damaged. Close the cover and push the drawer all the way in when you are ready to move the CD-ROM drive. NOTES: * Do not pull the drive open except to load and unload a disc. * Do not place anything on top of the drive or attempt to push down the drawer. * Do not install the CD-ROM drive in a place where the operating temperature exceeds the specified maximum operating temperature. * Do not attempt to service this unit yourself, as opening or removing covers might expose you to dangerous voltage points or invisible infrared laser radiation. Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel. * Condensation might form on the pick-up lens if the unit is suddenly removed from a cold environment to a warmer environment. This can result in the len's inability to properly read the disc. If this occurs, remove the disc and leave the power off. After about one hour, re-insert and play the disc again. If playing is not possible after several hours, contact you nearby Radio Shack Computer Center. * The use of optical instruments with this unit increases eye hazard. Do not use mirrors to view the lens or look directly into the lens. * Avoid using the CD-ROM drive while the computer is on its side. You might damage a compact disc if it falls out of the drive. * Avoid using this unit where there is a high level of dust and/or debris in the air. * Do not move the drive while the front of the drive is extended out from the computer. To prevent damage to the drive during transit, tape the drive closed. HANDLING DISCS Handle discs by the outer edge as much as possible. Avoid touching the disc surface with bare hands. To avoid dust, scratches, bending etc., always store the discs in a disc case when you are not using them. For best results, wipe the disc with a soft dry cloth, rubbing outward from the center. Do not use benzine, record cleaner, static electricity prevent- ion fluid, or other liquids that might damage the disc. NOTES: * Do not write on discs. * Do not directly attach any label to discs. * Do not bend discs. * Do not expose discs to direct sunlight. * Do not store discs in a room with high temperature (140 F) or high humidity (95%).
