CDR-1501 (250-1091) Installation Information Faxback Doc. # 5276 Read these hardware installation instructions completely before you install the CD-ROM drive. Proper planning and an understanding of the entire process is crucial to a successful installation. The CD-ROM adapter interface (or other boards inside your computer) might block access to the drive-tower mounting screws, depending on the type of chassis your computer uses. To ensure easy installation, install the CD-ROM drive before you install the adapter interface. You might have to temporarily remove other installed adapter boards that block access to the drive-tower screws. Installing the CD-ROM Drive: WARNING: Before you begin the installation, turn off the computer and unplug its power cord from the AC outlet. Then, disconnect the power cord and all other cables from the computer. Failure to disconnect the power can result in personal injury and damage to the computer and drive(s). CAUTION: Static electricity can damage electronic components. To prevent discharge of static electricity into your computer equipment, touch a grounded metal object before touching the drive or computer. The procedure for installing the CD-ROM drive depends on whether your computer has a Type A, Type B, or Type C chassis. Installation in a Type A (Clamshell) Chassis: To install the CD-ROM drive in a Type A chassis, do the following: 1. Remove the computer's cover as described in the computer's user's guide. 2. Lift the carriage assembly so that it swings to the side of the chassis. 3. Slide the drive into the 5 1/4" drive bay and secure it with the supplied mounting screws, from the bottom. Note: You might find it easier to connect the data and power cables before you secure the drive. 4. Lower the carriage assembly. Notes: * You can install only one 5 1/4" device in a Type A chassis. * See the computer's user's guide for more information about drive installation. Installation in a Type B (Uses plastic guide rails): To install the CD-ROM drive in the upper or lower 5 1/4" drive bay, do the following: WARNING: The computer chassis has sharp edges. 1. Remove the computer's cover as described in the computer's user's guide. 2. Select the 5 1/4" drive bay you want to use. 3. Remove the appropriate drive rails (upper or lower set) from the drive tower. 4. Using the four machine screws supplied with the computer, attach the drive rails and metal grounding clips to the CD-ROM drive as shown. Be sure to use the correct holes. 5. Slide the CD-ROM drive into the drive bay until the rails lock into place. Note: You might find it easier to connect the data and power cables before you slide the drive into place. Installation in a Type C (3000/4000 Series) Chassis: There are three drive bays in a Type C chassis. A diskette drive is installed in the top bay of most computers, so you can install the CD-ROM drive in the middle or lower bay. Select a 5 1/4" bay that has an opening in the front panel. Then, follow the set of instructions for the drive bay you select. Middle Drive Bay: Follow these steps to mount the drive in the middle drive bay of a Type C chassis. 1. Note the location of cables attached to the existing drives and disconnect the cables. 2. Remove the computer's cover as described in the computer's user's guide. 3. Slide the drive into the middle drive bay. Use rubber grommets and shoulder screws (25-4057, Part #. HC-3211, available through your local Radio Shack store) to attach the drive to the drive tower. 4. Reconnect any cables you disconnected from existing drives. Lower Drive Bay: Follow these steps to mount the drive in the lower drive bay of a Type C chassis. 1. Note the location of cables attached to the existing drives and discon- nect the cables. 2. Remove the computer's cover as described in the computer's user's guide. 3. Detach the backup battery from the side of the drive tower. Note: Do not disconnect the backup battery from the computer's main logic board. 4. Remove the four screws that secure the tower to the bottom of the com- puter chassis and the three screws that secure the tower to the front of the chassis. 5. Carefully lift the drive tower and pull it out of the chassis. 6. Attach shock isolators (25-5000, Part #. HC-2019, available through your local Radio Shack store) to the drive. 7. Slide the drive into the lower drive bay. Then, use the supplied machine screws to attach to the drive tower as shown. 8. Be sure there are no cables under the drive tower and reinstall the drive tower. Reattach the backup batter to the side of the drive tower. 9. Reconnect any cables you disconnected from existing drives. Installing the Adapter Interface: To install the adapter interface, do the following: Note: In some cases, it might be easier to attach the cables to the adapter interface before you install the adapter interface. 1. Select an empty option slot that is closest to the drive tower. 2. Install the adapter interface in the slot--be sure it seats properly. 3. Secure the adapter interface with the appropriate screw. Connecting the Data and Power Cables: Follow these steps to connect the data and power cables to the CD-ROM drive. 1. Plug one of the computer's power cables into the drive's power connector. Note: If the computer's power cable is not long enough to reach the CD-ROM drive's power connector, or the computer's power cable connector does not fit the CD-ROM drive's power connector, use a power cable extension (278-767) available at your local Radio Shack store. 2. Plug one end of the supplied ribbon cable into the CD-ROM's 40-pin connector. Be sure that the index notch on the drive's connector matches the cable's connector. Then, plug the other end of the ribbon cable into the adapter interface's connector labeled CN1. 3. Plug one end of the supplied 4-pin coaxial cable into the CD-ROM's 4-pin audio connector. Be sure the index notch on the drive's connector matches the cable's connector. 4. Plug the other end of the 4-pin coaxial cable into the adapter interface connector labeled CNJ1. 5. Remove the bezel panel from the computer's cover so that the front of the CD-ROM drive is visible when you view the front of the computer. Then, replace the computer's cover. (dtc-08/02/93)
