1.44MB Floppy Drive (250-4053A) Installation Faxback Doc. # 5370 PREPARING THE COMPUTER Turn off the computer, and disconnect the power cords and the data cables. Remove the computer cover as illustrated in your computer user's guide. PREPARING THE DISKETTE DRIVE Place the eject button cap over the eject button tab at the front of the drive. Push the cap gently until it snaps into place. Adjust the drive activity light to prevent it from bending in the wrong direction when you install the diskette drive. Gently press the drive activity light downward until it touches the printed circuit board. INSTALLATION The procedure for installing the diskette drive depends on whether the computer has a Type A, Type B, or Type C chassis. For a Type A or Type B chassis, refer to your computer user's guide for installation instructions. Then, read the "Completing the Installation" section later in this guide. Note: You must attach a 5.25-inch mounting bracket (Cat. No. 250-1076) to the drive before you can install the drive in a Type C chassis. ATTACHING A 5.25-INCH MOUNTING BRACKET To install the 3.5-inch drive in a 5.25-inch drive bay, you must attach a 5.25-inch mounting bracket (Cat. No., 250-1076) to the drive. To attach a 5.25-inch mounting bracket to the 3.5-inch drive: 1. Gently set the drive into the adapter bracket, aligning the 34-pin male connector on the back of the drive with the 34-pin female connector on the bracket. 2. With the connectors properly aligned, firmly press the disk drive and the bracket together to seat the connectors. 3. Insert the four screws that were supplied with the 5.25-inch mounting bracket into the mounting holes on the bottom of the bracket and into the disk drive. Tighten the four screws. 4. Snap the adapter bezel into place on the front of the disk drive. INSTALLATION IN A TYPE C CHASSIS After attaching a 5.25-inch mounting bracket, you can install the 1.44MB diskette drive in the upper 5.25-inch drive bay of a computer with a Type C chassis. Follow these steps: 1. Remove the computer cover as illustrated in the computer user's guide. 2. Remove the upper plastic insert from the front of the computer cover. 3. Note the location of any cables attaches to internal drives, and then disconnect the cables. 4. Install four grommets (purchased separately) into the mounting holes in the upper 5.25-inch drive bay. 5. Slide the diskette drive into the upper 5.25-inch drive bay, being sure that it does not slide against any other devices. Use the four shoulder screws provided with the 5.25-inch mounting bracket to fasten the diskette drive to the drive tower. Continue at the "Completing the Installation" section of this manual. COMPLETING THE INSTALLATION To complete the installation, connect the drive to the drive interface, using the diskette drive cable supplied with the computer. 1. Be sure the interface end of the diskette drive cable is attached to the diskette drive connector on the main logic board. Note: The connectors on the cable are keyed so that they connect only one way. Do not force the connection. 2. Attach the 34-pin female connector to the 3.5-inch diskette drive. 3. For Type C installation, connect a power cable to the adapter bracket. These power cables are identical; any power cable can be connected to any internal drive. Connect the card edge connector to the 5.25-inch adapter bracket. 4. Carefully replace the computer cover, and secure it with the screws you removed previously. 5. Reconnect all peripheral cables to the appropriate connectors on the back of the computer. 6. Reconnect the power cord. (css 08/02/93)
