202 MB SCSI Hard Drive (250-4164) Installation Faxback Doc. # 5426 Read this entire installation guide before you install the 202 MB SCSI hard disk drive. Keep your computer user's guide handy. It contains helpful installation information. Follow all directions carefully. If you do not wish to install the drive yourself, a technician at a Radio Shack Service Center can install the drive for you. A small fee will be charged for this service. For instructions about installing and accessing programs on the hard disk, refer to your operating system and application software documentation. CAUTION: Always protect electronic equipment from static electricity. Static electricity can destroy integrated circuits. Wear an anti-static wrist strap (available at any Radio Shack store) when handling the drive, the main logic board, a SCSI adapter, or any other electronic component inside the computer. PREPARING THE COMPUTER Turn off the computer and disconnect the power cord and any peripheral cables. Remove the computer cover as directed in your computer user's guide. ATTACHING 5 1/4" MOUNTING BRACKETS To install the 202 MB SCSI hard disk drive in a 5 1/4" drive bay of a Type A, B, or Type C chassis, you must attach mounting brackets to the drive before installing it. Refer to the "Installation" section for illustrations of chassis types. Mounting brackets can be ordered from Radio Shack Stores (AXX-7004). Use two machine screws to secure a mounting bracket to each side of the drive as shown. Be sure to use the screws supplied with the drive. INSTALLATION The procedure for installing the 202 MB SCSI hard disk drive depends on whether the computer has a Type A, Type B, or Type C chassis. Follow the appropriate procedure to install the drive. Then refer to the "Completing the Installation" section for cable connection information. INSTALLATION IN A TYPE A CHASSIS The Type A chassis has two 3 1/2" drive bays and a 5 1/4" drive bay. Install the drive in the 5 1/4" bay as described in the following procedure. Type A Chassis, 5 1/4" Drive Bay To install the drive in the 5 1/4" drive bay: 1. Open the computer to gain access to the 5 1/4" drive bay in the carriage 2. Slide the drive into the 5 1/4" drive bay. Align the appropriate mounting holes on the drive with the three mounting holes on the bottom of the carriage. Be sure the drive does not extend beyond the front of the carriage. NOTE: You can connect the cable to the drive before or after sliding the drive into the bay. Refer to the "Completing the Installation" section for the cable connection information. 3. Secure the drive, using three machine screws. INSTALLATION IN A TYPE B CHASSIS In a Type B chassis, install the drive in either the 3 1/2" drive platform or a 5 1/4" drive bay. Type B Chassis, 3 1/2" Drive Platform To install the drive in the 3 1/2" drive platform: 1. Remove the two screws holding the drive platform to the chassis. 2. Slide the drive platform back and up to remove it from the chassis and the drive tower. 3. Attach the drive to the platform as shown, using four machine screws. 4. Attach the drive platform to the drive tower by sliding the platform forward along the top of the tower until the tabs on the bottom of the platform engage. 5. Install the two screws (previously removed) to secure the drive platform to the chassis. Type B Chassis, 5 1/4" Drive Bay To install the drive into the 5 1/4" drive bay: 1. Determine which 5 1/4" drive bay you will be using: If the drive is the first hard disk drive in the system, install it in the lower 5 1/4" drive bay. If the drive is the second hard disk drive, install it in the upper 5 1/4" drive bay. 2. Remove the appropriate drive rails (upper or lower set) from the drive tower. 3. Attach a mounting bracket to each side of the drive as directed in "Attaching 5 1/4" Mounting Brackets" in the "Before You Begin" section. 4. Using four machine screws, attach the drive rails and metal grounding clips to the mounting brackets as illustrated. 5. Slide the drive into the 5 1/4" drive bay until the rails lock into place. NOTE: Connect the cable to the drive before or after you slide the drive into the drive bay. Refer to the "Completing the Installation" section for cable connection information. INSTALLATION IN A TYPE C CHASSIS In a Type C chassis, the drive can be installed in the upper or lower 5 1/4" drive bay. If the drive is the first hard disk drive in the system, install it in the lower 5 1/4" drive bay. If the drive is the second hard disk drive, install it in the upper 5 1/4" drive bay. For easy drive installation in the lower drive bay, you can remove the drive tower. Removing the drive tower is not necessary when mounting the drive in the upper 5 1/4" drive bay. To remove the drive tower: 1. Disconnect any cables attached to the internal drives. 2. Detach the battery from the Velcro strip on the side of the drive tower. Be careful not to disconnect the battery from the main logic board. The battery supplies power to the memory where information about your system setup is stored. If the battery is disconnected, this information will be lost. 3. Remove the seven screws that secure the tower to the computer chassis (four on the bottom and three on the front). 4. Carefully lift the drive tower up and out of the system unit. TYPE C CHASSIS, LOWER 5 1/4" DRIVE BAY To install the drive in the lower 5 1/4" bay: 1. Attach a mounting bracket to each side of the drive as directed in "Attaching 5 1/4" Mounting Brackets" in the "Before You Begin" section. 2. Attach the four shock isolators to the mounting brackets on each side of the drive. 3. Slide the drive into the lower 5 1/4" bay. If a device is installed in the upper 5 1/4" bay, be sure that the drive does not slide against it. Use the four machine screws provided with the computer to fasten the drive to the drive tower. NOTE: You can connect the cable to the drive before or after sliding the drive into the drive bay. Refer to the "Completing the Installation" section for cable connection information. 4. If you removed the drive tower, reinstall it now. Be sure that no cables are under the drive tower when you replace it. Re-attach the battery to the Velcro strip on the side of the drive tower. Type C Chassis, Upper 5 1/4" Drive Bay To install the drive in the upper 5 1/4" bay: 1. Install the four grommets into the mounting holes in the upper 5 1/4" drive bay. 2. Slide the drive into the upper 5 1/4" drive bay, being sure that it does not slide against any other devices. Use the four shoulder screws to fasten the drive to the drive tower. NOTE: You can connect the cable to the drive either before or after sliding the drive into the drive bay. Refer to the "Completing the Installation" section for cable connection information. COMPLETING THE INSTALLATION To complete the installation, connect the drive to the drive interface, using the cable supplied with the SCSI adapter board. 1. Attach one end connector of the drive cable to the drive connector on the SCSI adapter. NOTE: The connectors on the cable are keyed so that they connect only one way. Do not force the connection. The cable has a colored stripe to indicate Pin 1. 2. Attach the other end connector to the drive. If you have two SCSI drives installed, attach the inside connector to one of the drives. 3. Locate the power supply; several power cables extend from it. Connect a power cable to the drive at connector J3. 4. Install any other internal options that you are adding at this time. Then, carefully replace the computer cover, and secure it with the screws you removed previously. 5. Reconnect all peripheral cables to the appropriate connectors on the back of the computer. 6. Reconnect the power cord. (smm 08/26/93)
