3-COM Etherlink Plus Interface (260-5502) Install Faxback Doc. # 5466 INSTALLING THE BOARD The board slides into an expansion slot inside the main system unit of a personal computer. The following procedure provides instructions for installing a board inside an IBM personal computer. For other types of personal computers, refer to the computer's operation manual for instruc- tions on installing expansion boards. The connector attached to the short edge of the board fits into a cot-out in the rear panel of the main system unit. The network cable T connector plugs into the BNC connector and connects the computer with other computers on the network. STEP 1: DISCONNECT CABLES FROM THE COMPUTER 1. Turn off the computer, the monitor, and the printer, if one is con- nected. 2. Unplug the computer power first from the wall and then from the main system unit. 3. Disconnect the monitor cables from the main system unit and put the monitor aside. 4. Disconnect the keyboard from the main system unit and put the keyboard aside. 5. Disconnect any other cables from the rear or side panel of the main system unit (for example, the printer cable). Make sure that all cables are removed from the main system unit and that only the EtherLink Plus board and the main system unit are in your work space. 6. Position the main system unit so that you can reach the rear panel and have room to work. STEP 2: REMOVE THE MAIN SYSTEM UNIT COVER Remove the main system unit cover so that you have access to the expan- sion slots. Refer to the personal computer's operation manual if you need instructions for removing the cover. STEP 3: INSTALL THE ETHERLINK PLUS BOARD GUIDE Snap the plastic board guide into the tow holes in the system unit front panel. The plastic leaves of the board guide should point down as shown in Figure 2-3. The end of the board will slide into the groove in the guide to hold the board in place. STEP 4: REMOVE THE EXPANSION SLOT COVER If you are installing an EtherLink Plus board in an IBM AT, the 16-bit slots are recommended because they offer higher performance. A Tandy 3000 with hard disk(s) should be equipped with an EtherLink Plus to provide optimum performance as a share server or other network server. Also, a Tandy 3000 with EtherLink Plus can be used as a workstation to provide a user with the best possible performance for intensive applica- tions. The EtherLink Plus is not recommended for installation in a Tandy 3000 HL due to the HL's 8-bit DMA access. Remove the cover plate from the expansion slot. The board has its own cover plate, but you should keep the expansion slot cover plate for future use. STEP 5: INSERT THE BOARD CAUTION: Make sure you have disconnected all power cables before you insert the board. 1. Tilt the board and slip the connector through the rear panel. 2. Press, but do not force, the board firmly into the slot in the main system unit. Make sure that the edge connector on the bottom of the board plugs into the socket on the system board. If you are installing an EtherLink Plus board, make sure that the end of the board fits into the board guide. Installed correctly, the board is flush with any other option boards that are installed in the personal computer. 3. Replace the screw you removed from the cover plate to keep the board firmly seated in the expansion slot. STEP 6: REPLACE THE SYSTEM UNIT COVER Replace the system unit cover. Refer to the personal computer's opera- tion manual if you need instructions. STEP 7: RECONNECT CABLES AND POWER 1. Place the monitor back on top of the main system unit and reconnect the cables. 2. Reconnect the keyboard cable and any other devices that were attached to the main system unit. 3. Plug the power cord back into the main system unit and then into the wall. (DKH/jlc-03/28/94)
