External Hard (260-5217) Installation Faxback Doc. # 5532 Disk Controller 1. Caution should be exercised in low humidity environments to prevent damage to electronic parts by static electricity being discharged through them. Discharge any built-up static electricity by touching a grounded metal object before proceeding further. 2. WARNING: TURN OFF ALL EQUIPMENT. Turn the power off and disconnect the power cord from the back of the computer. If the computer is on, you could damage the central processing unit, as well as your Hard Disk Controller board. Before beginning the installation of the Hard Disk Controller, be sure the kit contains the Hard Disk Controller, one 34-pin hard disk drive ribbon control cable, one 20-pin data cable and 2 screws. 3. Check the Hard Disk Controller board and confirm that pins E2-E3 are jumpered. (No jumper is required for pins E4-E5 and E6-E7.) 4. Before you proceed, check again to be sure that the power is turned off to all peripherals and the Tandy 2000, and all power cords are disconnected from the outlets. 5. As you face the back of the computer, you will see black metal panels covering the unused expansion slots. The panel covering the top slot will need to be removed. Simply pull out on the black pins located at both ends of the panel and the panel will slip off. 6. Slide the new Hard Disk Controller board onto the top slot on the back panel of your Tandy 2000. Insert one of the screws into each end of the back panel of the Hard Disk Controller to secure the board. Be careful not to overtighten the screws. 7. Find the 34-pin hard disk drive ribbon control cable. Attach one end of the cable to the DRIVE CONTROL connector on the Hard Disk Controller. Attach the end to the CONTROL IN connector on the hard disk. (There is a polarizing tab on each of the cable connectors. This tab should be on top as you insert the connector. Don't force the plug. If it doesn't fit one way, check to be sure the tab is on top.) 8. Locate the 20-pin data cable. Attach one end of the cable to the DRIVE DATA connector on the Hard Disk Controller. Attach the other end to the DATA IN connector on the hard disk. (Do not force the plug. If it doesn't fit one way, check to be sure the polarizing tab is on top.) 9. Reconnect the power cords. You can now use your new Hard Disk Controller (together with your hard disk) to store more data in your computer. See your operating system manual or your application manual for instructions on using your Tandy 2000 with a hard disk. (SMM/jlc-03/23/94)
