40 MB Tape Drive (250-4069) Installation Faxback Doc. # 5621 INSTALLATION ON COMPUTERS WITH ONE DISKETTE DRIVE The following instructions detail the installation of the internal tape unit in computers that have one diskette drive in the configuration. To install the hardware, you will need to have the following at hand: -- the tape drive -- a medium-sized Phillips screwdriver NOTE: Carefully observe the procedure outlined in your CPU system manual concerning power and electrical disconnection before proceeding with the following installation instructions. 1. Turn off your computer, turn off all externally attached devices, and disconnect power and all other cables from your unit; note the location of the cables so that you can re-attach them later. If you computer has a key lock, be sure it is unlocked, and remove the key. 2. Remove the cover mounting screws, and then remove the cover by sliding it forward as shown in Figure A-3. 3. Disconnect all cables from the diskette drive, carefully noting their locations. Remove the mounting screws from the diskette drive and care- fully slide it out of its bay. Re-install the diskette drive when you finish installing the tape drive. 4. Remove the cover plate from the empty installation bay in your computer. Slide the tape drive into the middle installation bay and secure it with the four screws as shown in Figure A-4. 5. Take one of the power cables that are attached to the computer's power supply as shown in Figure A-4, and plug it into the power receptacle of the tape drive, which is shown in Figure A-5. 6. Find an unconnected ground wire and connect it to the ground lug on the tape drive, as shown in Figure A-5. 7. Locate the ribbon data cable that is connected between the diskette drive and diskette controller. As shown in Figure A-6, this cable will have an edge connector near the diskette end. This connector is for use with drive designated Drive B - which is what the tape drive will become. (The tape drive will be Drive B in the system configuration, but it cannot be ad- dressed as such; the diskette drive will remain Drive A). 8. Plug the Drive B connector of the diskette data cable onto the cable edge connector of the tape drive, which is shown in Figure A-5. These connec- tors are keyed to help you properly orient them. 9. Install the mounting screws as shown in Figure A-4. Make sure that all in- ternal cables are out of the way, and then replace the system covers and cover hardware. 10. Refer to the Software Installation section of this appendix for instruc- tions on installing the tape software on your system's hard disk. (dtc-08/03/93)
