40 MB Tape Drive (250-4069) Software Faxback Doc. # 5623 SOFTWARE INSTALLATION NOTE: Customers having a Tandy 3000 or Tandy 4000 with BIOS ROM version 01.03.01 will notice that when booting the computer with the 40 Meg Internal Tape Cartridge System installed, the message: Invalid configuration information - please run SETUP program Strike the F1 to continue will appear. Simply press F1 and continue with your boot up procedure. Ignoring this message will not impair the operation of the computer or tape drive. Previous and future BIOS ROM versions will not display this message. The tape software is designed to be installed and run from a hard disk; it cannot be run from a floppy. The software may be installed on any hard disk that is formatted for DOS 2.1 or higher; the system must have at least 256KB of RAM. To install the software, you need the tape Master Diskette that was shipped with this manual. The software is designed to be installed from Drive A only; it cannot be installed from drive B. NOTE: The key which is referred to as the RETURN key in this manual is called the ENTER key on some keyboards. 1. Turn on power to your computer and to the tape unit; allow the system to boot up. Insert the master diskette into drive A, type A:INSTALL and press RETURN. The Install Software title screen will be displayed, verifying that the software installation program is ready. 2. If the correct date is in the display, press RETURN. If the date is incorrect, type N and press RETURN; then enter the correct date according to the prompt format and again press RETURN. The time display will then come up, and the same procedure should be used to enter the correct time. When RETURN is pressed after the time entry, the Install Software menu will be displayed. 3. Select the next step from the menu items, and press the appropriate Function Key: F1 -- If you want to begin installation of tape software. F9 -- If you would like the Installation Help Menu, from which you can obtain more information about the tape software installation. F10 -- If you want to return the system to DOS control. 4. Press F1 when you are ready to begin installation of the software. The display will then prompt you for the letter of the drive on which you want the software installed. It will also prompt you for a directory name in which to install the software; if you would like to use the name TAPE, press F1. If you would like to create your own directory name, then follow standard MS-DOS format (up to eleven characters may be used, and if more than eight are used, a period must follow the eighth character), and enter your selected name. Then press F1. 5. The display will then prompt you to answer whether or not your system uses a color monitor. Enter the appropriate response, and press RETURN. 6. Next you'll be asked if your computer has a tape adapter board installed. Give the appropriate response, and press RETURN. 7. You will then be asked if your computer is one of several models listed on the screen. (The purpose of this is to make a setup adjustment if being used with one of the listed computers.) Enter the appropriate response, and press RETURN. 8. If your response to the previous question was Y, you will be asked to enter the number corresponding to your computer on the list; the press RETURN. 9. The software will now be installed. The tape software file names will be listed as they are copied to the hard disk, and the message "WORKING" will flash on and off. NOTE: If your system's CONFIG.SYS file has less than 17 buffers, the num- ber will be increased to 17 in order to enhance performance. If more than 17 buffers exist, it will be left as is. When CONFIG.SYS is modified, a copy of the original file is stored as CONFIG.BXX, where the XX is a unique number generated by the software to ensure that it does not con- flict with an existing file name. 10. The final prompt will be for the drive from which your system boots. After entering this, press RETURN, and one of the four different messages will be displayed: a) Tape System Installation Successful...this is the display that you will normally see, indicating that the tape software installation was successfully completed. You may then press F1 to return to the main menu, and then press F10 if you then wish to return to DOS. b) Tape System Installation Complete, Except Config.Sys File Not Updated...if this message comes up, either the software had difficulty updating the Config.Sys file, or the operator did not want it updated. In both cases, the program will still operate, but speed performance may be somewhat down graded. c) Tape System Installation Complete, Except Config.BXX File Not Crea- ted...this message indicates that the file was not created due to files previously existing under those names. d) Tape System Installation Unsuccessful...this means that the software could not be installed, and an error message indicating the reason will be displayed. Refer to the Error Messages chapter for an expla- nation. 11. This completes installation of the tape software. You can now operate the system as desired, using either menu or command mode, as explained in Chapters 3 and 4, respectively. (dtc-08/03/93)
