Parallel Port Kit (260-2903) Installation Procedures Faxback Doc. # 5713 The extension kit is designed to be a plug-in-and-go device, so you should be able to immediately install and use it. However, you might need an additional modular cord and an inline coupler to extend the connection between the receiver and transmitter, based on your existing space and/or office layout (see the Appendix). the necessary cord and coupler are available from your local Radio Shack store. When choosing a location, position the cord so it is not in the way of normal activities. Modular Cord Extension The Tandy Parallel Extension Kit's modular cord is specially designed for data transmission, and, while it might resemble a standard telephone cord, its connectors are not the same. YOU MUST USE THE SUPPLIED CORD TO CONNECT THE RECEIVER AND TRANSMITTER. However, you can lengthen the cord between the receiver and transmitter by doing the following: 1. Connect the supplied cord to an inline modular coupler (such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 279-358). 2. Connect a standard telephone cord of the desired length (such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 279-374) to the inline coupler. NOTE: The supplied data transmission cord must be used in the connection. You cannot use two standard telephone cords. 3. Connect the lengthened cord to the receiver and transmitter. CAUTIONS: -Although the system's modular cord resembles a standard telephone-type cord, its connections are different. The system will only operate with the supplied modular cord. DO NOT CONNECT THE EXTENSION KIT TO YOUR TELEPHONE SYSTEM. -Place the cord as far as possible from any electrical noise sources, such as air conditioners, motors, fluorescent lights, and AC lines which might carry high voltage or current. -To avoid damage to your equipment, turn off the power to the computer and the printer (or sharing device). Avoid a possible static discharge by touching a grounded metal object (such as the computer's metal chassis) before you begin. CONNECTION: 1. Connect the transmitter (marked To Computer) to your computer's DB-25 printer output port. Secure the transmitter using the supplied the supplied screws. 2. Connect the receiver (marked To Printer) to your printer or sharing device's input port. 3. Connect the supplied modular cord's plugs to the modular jacks on the transmitter and receiver. 4. Make sure to provide 2-3 inches of extra cord so there is no tension on the cord and place it where it will not be pinched, pulled, or stepped on. If the cord is too long, you can coil it and use a wire tie to bundle it. NOTES: -If you need to lengthen the modular cord between the receiver and transmitter, follow the instructions in the Appendix. -To maintain stable data transfer, the system's total connection length should be 1200 feet or shorter.
