Follow these steps to install or replace the standard black or optional
color ribbon cassette.  when the print becomes light, replace the ribbon
cassette with a standard black (Cat. No. 26-2871) or color (Cat. No.
26-2900 ribbon cassette.

CAUTION:  Printing without a ribbon damages the print head and the platen.

1.  Set POWER to OFF and unplug the printer before you replace the ribbon
    cassette.

NOTE:  When you turn off the printer, any information stored in the buffer
       is lost.  (The buffer holds information the computer has sent but
       the printer has not printed.)

2.  Remove the paper rack and open the printer cover.

NOTE:  You might find it easier to install the ribbon cassette with the
       cover removed.  To remove it, raise it to a 45-degree angle and
       pull it away from the printer.

3.  To remove the old ribbon cassette, grasp the ribbon knob on top of
    the cassette and gently pull it up.

4.  Remove the new ribbon cassette from its protective bag.  Then tighten
    the ribbon by turning the ribbon feed knob in the direction of the
    arrow.

5.  Slide the print head to the center of the paper ball.  Then carefully
    thread the ribbon between the ribbon mask and the print head.

6.  Correctly install the new ribbon as described in "If You Are
    Installing the Black Ribbon Cassette" or "If You Are Installing the
    Color Ribbon Cassette."

IF YOU ARE INSTALLING THE BLACK RIBBON CASSETTE

1.  Position the left end of the cassette so the black lower ribbon feed
    spindle slides into the hole on the underside of the ribbon feed knob.

2.  Press down on the cassette's left side until it snaps into place.

3.  Position the cassette's right side so the cassette is straight.  Then
    press down on the cassette's right side until it snaps into place.

CAUTION:  If the ribbon feed knob does not line up with the ribbon feed
          spindle, the cassette is not properly inserted.  Do not force
          the cassette into place.  Instead, remove the cassette and try
          again.

4.  Tighten the ribbon by turning the ribbon feed knob in the direction of
    the arrow.

NOTE:  The life expectancy for the sample black ribbon cassette supplied
       with the printer is shorter than estimated life expectancy of a
       replacement ribbon.

If you removed the printer cover, replace it by holding it at a 45-degree
angle and sliding its grooves over the printer's tabs.;  Close the printer
cover.

IF YOU ARE INSTALLING THE COLOR RIBBON CASSETTE

NOTE:  The color ribbon is designed to shift up and down during printing
       to select the printing color.

1.  Position the cassette's left end so the color ribbon feed spindle
    (light green color) slides into the hole on the ribbon feed knob's
    underside.

2.  Slide the color ribbon cassette's ribbon guide to the center of the
    exposed ribbon.  Position the color ribbon cassette as shown, and
    place the ribbon roller guide over the print head.

3.  Lower the cassette into the printer, placing the ribbon between the
    print head and ribbon mask.

4.  Fit the pins on the cassette's left end into the corresponding notch
    in the printer.  Push down on the cassette's left side until it clicks
    into place.

5.  Position the cassette's right side so the cassette is straight, and
    press down on it until the cassette snaps into place.

CAUTION:  If the ribbon feed knob does not line up with the ribbon feed
          spindle, the cassette is not properly inserted.  Do not force
          the cassette into place.  Instead, remove the cassette and try
          again.

6.  Tighten the ribbon by turning the ribbon feed knob in the direction of
    the arrow

If you removed the printer cover, replace it by holding it at a 45-degree
angle and sliding its grooves over the printer's tabs.  Close the printer
cover.
