DMP 205 (260-2904) Loading Paper Faxback Doc. # 5738 INSTALLING THE PAPER RACK AND SOUNDPROOF COVER The paper rack guides single-sheet paper into the printer, and the sound proof cover reduces noise during printing. Install the paper rack for the type of paper you plan to use. -SINGLE-SHEET PAPER: Hold the paper rack at an angle and guide its tabs into the slits on each side of the printer. The paper rack rests in a slanted position. -FANFOLD PAPER: Hold the paper rack horizontally and slide its tabs into the slots on each side of the printer so it rests in a flat position. CONNECTING THE PRINTER TO POWER Before you plug the power cord into an AC outlet, check the following: -The printers POWER switch is set to OFF. -The printer is not connected to the computer. Connect the AC power plug to a 120-volt, 60Hz AC outlet or a UL approved power strip, such as Radio Shack's 6-Outlet Auto Power Controller (Cat. No. 26-1396) or the Power Switching System (Cat. No. 26-203). If the power cord and/or printer cord reach across the back of the printer, position them behind the two tabs at the bottom of the back panel. This prevents the cords from interfering with the flow of fanfold paper. Follow the instructions for the type of paper you are using. To change from single-sheet to fanfold paper, or the reverse, see "Changing to Loading Method" later in this section. The printer senses when the printer runs out of paper. See "Paper-Out Sensor." CAUTION: Printing without paper can damage the print head or platen. LOADING SINGLE-SHEET PAPER Follow these steps to load single-sheet paper. 1. Set POWER to ON. 2. Be sure the paper rack and soundproof cover are in the correct position for single-sheet paper. See "Installing the Paper Rack and Soundproof Cover." 3. Move the paper selector to the single-sheet setting. 4. Adjust the left paper guide for the paper width you are using by moving it within the square indicator at the top left of the paper rack. The "L" in the indicator shows the standard setting for letter-size (8 1/2 inch-wide) paper. Do not move the left paper guide outside the square when loading single sheet paper. 5. Set a sheet of paper on the paper rack and slide it down behind the platen until the paper cannot slide any farther. Do not turn the paper feed knob. Doing so prevents you from using the auto-load feature. Position the paper so its left edge is against the left paper guide. Then slide the right paper guide to the left until it touches the paper's right edge. CAUTION: Failure to properly position the paper between the guides can cause improper operation of the paper-out sensor or frequent paper jams 6. To use automatic paper loading, pull the paper lever toward the front of the printer. The paper advances to 1/2 inch above the printstart position. NOTE: If the PAPER OUT INDICATOR is on, remove the paper and load it again. 7. Push the paper bail lever toward the back of the printer so the bail is against the paper. The paper retracts to the print-start position. -To adjust the paper's horizontal (left\right) alignment, set the paper selector to the fanfold setting and adjust the position of the paper. After you align the paper, set the paper selector back to the single-sheet setting. -To adjust the paper's vertical (up/down) alignment, turn the paper feed knob or press LF/FF to advance the paper. 8. Set the print head adjustment lever to the correct position for the type of paper you are using. See "Adjusting the Print-Head Gap." 9. Press ON/OFF LINE to set the printer on line. LOADING FANFOLD PAPER You can use 1 or 2-part standard fanfold paper form 4 1/2 to 10 inches wide. Follow these steps to load fanfold paper. 1. Set POWER to ON. 2. Remove the paper rack. 3. Position the tractors to match the width of your paper. 4. Open the paper clamps. 5. Align the guide holes in the paper with the sprockets on the printer. 6. Close the paper clamps. If necessary, re-position the tractors until the paper is flat. 7. Set the paper selector to the fanfold setting. 8. To use automatic paper loading, pull the paper bail lever forward. The paper advances to the print-start position. NOTE: If the PAPER OUT indicator is on, remove the paper and load it again. 9. Push the paper bail lever back until the paper bail is against the paper. 10. Install the paper rack and the soundproof cover in the position for fanfold paper (see "Installing the Paper Rack and Soundproof Cover") Slide both paper guides apart to the farthest position so they do not interfere with the flow of paper. Lower the soundproof cover. 11. If necessary, set the print-head adjustment lever to the appropriate position for 2-part paper. See "Adjusting the Print-Head Gap." 12. Press ON/OFF LINE to set the printer on line. NOTES: -To prevent paper skewing or jamming, insert the paper into the printer directly from the back of the printer. -Do not let printed paper pile up on top of unprinted paper. This could cause the paper to improperly feed and might damage the printer. CHANGING THE LOADING METHOD You can load single sheet paper without removing the fanfold paper. To change from fanfold to single-sheet loading, do the following. 1. With the printer on, remove any previously printed sheets of fanfold paper by tearing off the last sheet at its perforation. 2. Press ON/OFF LINE to set the printer off line. 3. Press PARK. The fanfold paper retracts to the parked position. 4. Set the paper rack and soundproof cover to the single-sheet position (see "Installing the Paper Rack"). 5. Set the paper selector to the single-sheet position. 6. Load single-sheet paper as instructed in "Loading Single-Sheet Paper." 7. Press ON/OFF LINE to set the printer on line. When you are ready to print on fanfold paper again, follow these steps. 1. Press ON/OFF LINE to set the printer off line. 2. Press and hold LF/FF to eject the single-sheet paper. 3. Set the paper rack and soundproof cover to the fanfold paper position (see "Installing the Paper Rack"). 4. Set the paper selector to the fanfold position. 5. Pull the paper bail lever toward you and then push it back against the paper to load the fanfold paper. 6. Press ON/OFF LINE to set the printer on line. (smc-12/07/93)
