60 MB Tape Drive (250-4079A) Hardware Installation Faxback Doc. # 5850 NOTE: If you are installing an external tape drive and/or an accessory board, please refer to its Installation Guide(s). Minimum Requirements: To install and use the internal tape drive, your computer must meet the following criteria: * Tandy or other PC compatible computer * One half-height, 5.25" installation bay available. NOTE: If you are installing the backup system for use with 3COM or Novell networks, refer to pages 5-1 and 5-5 for special hardware and software installation instructions. INSTALLING THE TAPE DRIVE CAUTION: CAREFULLY OBSERVE THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN YOUR COMPUTER'S MANUAL CONCERNING POWER AND ELECTRICAL DISCONNECTION BEFORE INSTALLING THE TAPE DRIVE. 1. The tape drive can be installed into almost any 5.25 inch drive bay. Tandy Computers have two basic chassis types. Before installing the tape drive, refer to your computer's user's guide to determine if it is a Type A or Type B Chassis. Follow the instructions in this guide that apply to your chassis. 2. Turn off your computer and all externally attached devices. 3. Remove the cover mounting screws, and then remove the cover as detailed in your computer's manuals. 4. Select an installation bay in which to install the tape drive. Remove the installation bay cover plate from your computer's cover. Refer to your computer owner's manual for detailed instructions. NOTE: If you remove diskette drive B to install the tape drive, change the System Configuration to indicate that diskette drive B is not installed. NOTE: Steps 5 and 6 apply ONLY to Type A chassis computers. 5. Locate the right-angle bracket and screws supplied with the tape drive. Attach the right-angle bracket to the right side of the tape drive using the supplied screws. 6. Slide the tape drive into the 5.25" drive bay. Align the drive and bracket mounting holes with the holes in the drive tower. Secure the tape drive with the three remaining screws. NOTE: Steps 7 & 8 apply ONLY to Type B chassis computers. 7. If your computer has a Tandy Type B chassis, pull the rails from the selected installation bay and install them on the tape drive. Note the rail mounting holes used and install both ground contacts. 8. After installing the rails on the tape drive, slide the tape drive into the selected installation bay. NOTE: The remaining installation steps apply to both chassis types. 9. Take one of the power cables from your computer's power supply and plug it into the power connector on the tape drive. 10. Locate the ribbon data cable connecting the diskette drive(s) and the diskette controller in your computer. Remove the cable's connector attached to the diskette controller connector. Leave the other connector(s) attached to your diskette drive(s). 11. Locate the data cable supplied with this kit. Attach the end header connector to the computer's diskette drive controller. Gently press the connectors together. 14. Take the free end of the computer's existing data cable (formerly attached to the diskette controller connector) and attach it to the male pin connector on the data cable. To align pin 1 on the connector with pin 1 on the female receptacle, match the color stripes on both cables. Gently press the connectors together. 15. Take the card edge connector at the free end of the data cable and attach it to the data connector on the tape drive. These connectors are keyed to help you properly align them. 16. Make sure all internal cables are out of the way and then replace your computer's cover and cover hardware. 17. Refer to the Software Installation section in this chapter to install the backup system software. (smm 08/05/93)
