60 MB Tape Drive (250-4079A) Software Installation Faxback Doc. # 5852 Software Installation IMPORTANT NOTE: Do not use this program under Microsoft Windows. To install the backup system software you must run the installation program on the Tape Backup System program diskette. DO NOT SIMPLY COPY THE FILES. The backup system software can be installed from any diskette drive. The backup system software MUST BE INSTALLED on and run from a hard disk formatted with DOS 2.1 or higher. Your computer must have at least 320KB of AVAILABLE memory to run the backup system software. If you are installing a new software release or re-installing your tape software, delete the old tape software files before you begin or install the software in a different directory. NOTE: See pages 5-1 and 5-5 for special 3Com and Novell network installation instructions. This section explains how to install the backup system software. Follow the step-by-step instructions and in a few minutes your backup system will be ready to use. 1. Turn on your computer and allow it to boot. Insert the Tape Backup System program diskette into the drive of your choice. Change to that drive, then type install and press enter. For example, if you inserted the program diskette into drive A:, type a: and press enter and then type install and press enter. The Install Software menu is displayed. NOTE: Press F9 for installation help. 2. Press one of the keys from F1 to F8 to install the backup system software in an available language. Only the languages shown on this screen are available to you. All menu and command functions will be installed in the language you choose. 3. The next screen prompts you to enter the drive letter and directory name where you want the backup system software installed. Press enter to move the cursor from one entry to the other. The default drive letter is C:. The default directory name is TAPE. You can change the entries or accept the defaults. When you have made your choices, press F1 to continue the installation process. 4. If your computer is equipped with a color monitor, type Y and press enter. If not, simply press enter to continue. NOTE: The accessory boards listed are available from a third-party catalog. They offer advantages such as allowing the internal tape drive to be installed in a computer with two diskette drives or in external configuration. If you have installed one of these accessory boards, refer to its manual for configuration instructions. 5. If you have installed one of the listed accessory boards in your computer, type Y and press enter. If not, simply press enter to continue. 6. This screen prompts you to choose whether you want to use expanded memory with the backup system software. In most cases, enter N for this option. Please read the discussion of expanded memory below before proceeding. If your computer has more than 1MB of memory and you have a LIM EMS 4.0 driver installed, the backup system software will load the directory structure of your hard disk into expanded memory before a backup. If you have a very large directory structure - dozens of directories and several thousand files - making use of this option enhances the performance of the backup system. However, under ordinary circumstances, using expanded memory with the backup system is not necessary and is not recommended. 7. The next screen prompts you to install Unattended Backup which is used to schedule backups to be automatically performed when you are normally not using your computer. Type Y and press enter to install, or simply press enter to continue without installing Unattended Backup. NOTE: If you choose to install Unattended Backup, the software makes a copy of your original AUTOEXEC.BAT file under the name AUTOEXEC.BXX, where XX is a number generated by the software. 8. Installation of the backup system software then begins. The file names are listed as they are copied. NOTE: If your CONFIG.SYS file designates less than 17 buffers, the number will be increased to 17. If it designates 17 or more buffers, the number will not be changed. If your CONFIG.SYS file is modified, a copy of the original file is stored as CONFIG.BXX, where XX is a number generated by the software to ensure that it does not conflict with an existing file name. 9. After all backup system files have been copied to your hard disk, the installation software prompts you to enter the letter of the drive your computer boots from. If the letter displayed is correct, press enter. If it is not correct, type the letter and press enter. 10. The screen will indicate that the backup system software is properly installed. Any other message indicates a problem. 11. This completes installation of the backup system software. Press F10 from the Install Menu to return to DOS. If your AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS files were modified during software installation, reboot your computer before using the backup system. To start the Menu software, type TAPE at the DOS prompt.
