Fax Modem (250-3581) Starting BitCom Faxback Doc. # 5878 After installing BitCom, you are ready to start the program. TO START BITCOM: 1. At the DOS prompt, type: CD\BITCOM [ENTER] 2. Type: BITCOM [ENTER] BitCom's Communications Selection Menu will appear. Please note that logo message may be different if you are using Version 6.X. CONFIGURING BITCOM Before using BitCom, you need to check whether it is correctly configured to your system. 1. Open the communications configuration menu. You can open this menu in one of three ways: Click on the Config command, press ESC then G, or press Alt-G. 2. In the port field, choose the COM port of your modem. In the port field, use your left-arrow and right-arrow keys to choose COM1 through COM4. 3. Select the quit command to save changes. ADDING A PHONE RECORD 1. Open the communications selection menu. 2. Select the AddRec command. 3. In the record ID field, enter compserv. You must enter up to eight characters. Press Enter or use your mouse to highlight the Description field. 5. In the phone number field, enter compserve's phone number. For San Jose, Calif,., enter 1-408-988-5366 or call 1-800-635-6225 for your local CompuServe number. If you have to dial nine to get an outside line, add "9," to the beginning of the number. The comma stands for a two-second pause. 6. In the baud field, choose the highest baud rate that your modem and remote side share. NOTE: If you are using BitCom version 6.X set V42 field to YES. Set Connect Type to Default otherwise: 7. In the parity field, choose none. 8. In the data field, choose 8. 9. In the stop field, choose 1. 10. In the echo field choose no. 11. In the mode field, choose call. 12. In the FlwCtl field, choose RTS/CTS. 13. Select the quit command. The new record will appear in the communications Selection Menu You will see its Record Id, Descriptions, Phone Number and Record Number. MAKING A CONNECTION To check whether you have correctly configured BitCom to your system, follow the instructions below to make a connection with CompuServe. 1. Choose the CompuServe record you just created. Use either your mouse or the up and down arrow keys. 2. Select the connect command When BitCom has made a connection, you will see something like "CONNECT 2400" or "CONNECT 1200" at the top of the screen, and the Connect clock in the lower-right corner will start running. 3. Select the option menu command. 4. Select the hang up command. USING BITCOM'S V.42/MNP The 6.X version of BitCom is designed to emulate the V.42bis, V.42 and MNP-5 protocols. To use BitCom's software-emulated V.42bis, V.42 and MNP, set the V42 field in the Communications Parameters menu to YES . If the systems you make a connection wit does not support V.42bis, V.42 or MNP, BitCom will automatically "fall back" to a normal connection with does not support V.42bis, V.42 or MNP, BitCom will automatically "fall back" to a normal connection. NOTE: BitCom's V.42bis, V.42 and MNP emulation only works with the modem that BitCom came with (or other modems that use the Rockwell 225 chipset). ANSWER MODE In order for someone to call and make a connection with our computer, BitCom must be in answer mode. Follow the instructions below to place BitCom in answer mode. 1. Open the Communications Selection Menu. 2. Select the AddRec Command. 3. Fill the ID and description fields. 4. Leave the phone number field blank and set the V42 field to YES. 5. Set the baud rate, parity, data bits and stop bits. We suggest setting Parity to None, Data bits to 8, and Stop bits to 1. These are most common settings. 6. Set the mode field to Ansr. 7. Select the quit command. 8. Select the answer phone record you just created. 9. Select the connect command. You will see the following message on the screen: AT...SO=1 OK BitCom is ready to answer incoming calls. MAKING A DIRECT CONNECTIONS (MODEM TEST) Using BitCom's Direct Connect Mode, you can send Hayes Commands directly to your modem. You can use this mode to make a direct connection with another computer (using a cable instead of telephone lines and a modem). 1. From the Communications Selection Menu, select the record "dumb terminal, local connection". 2. Select the connect command. You are now ready to communicate with the other computer or send Hayes commands to your modem. To test the modem, type ATI and press ENTER. You should see the modem return it's ID code. To reset your modem, type ATZ. 3. Open the option menu (press F2). 4. Select the hang up command. USING COM3 OR COM4 Two COM ports cannot share an IRQ line at the same time. For example, you cannot set your modem to COM2 and your mouse to COM4. To solve this problem, BitCom lets you set COM3 or COM4 to IRQ5, thus avoiding any conflicts with COM1 or COM2, and allowing you to use a third serial device. To change the IRQ number of a COM port, open the Communications Configuration Menu and select the SET IRQ command. In the Assigned column of COM3 or COM4, use your left or right arrow key to toggle to IRQ5. CLOSING BITCOM To quit BitCom, return to the Communications Selection Menu and select the Quit command.
