NOTE: Installing the TCS-100 software modifies the CONFIG.SYS file. The installation changes the number of buffers to 17. If you want a different number of buffers, edit the CONFIG.SYS file after you install the TCS-100 software. APPENDIX C EPROM INSTALLATION NOTE: The instructions that follow apply only to some versions of the Tandy 1000HD (25-1001). Refer to the NOTE under step 6. An EPROM chip for the Tandy 1000HD is being shipped so the TCS Interface board in your computer can be used to access this EPROM chip on your Tandy 1000HD hard disk controller board. To install the EPROM, you have to remove the hard disk controller board and exchange the EPROM. NOTE: The instructions that follow only support the Tandy 1000HD as configured by the factory. 1. Locate your Tandy 1000HD hard disk controller board. This board is the one closest to the hard disk and has a 34 pin cable and a 20 pin cable connected between the board and hard disk. 2. Remove the 20 pin data cable from connector J2 on the hard disk controller board. Remove the 34 pin control cable from connector J1 on the hard disk controller board. 3. Remove the screw from the top of the mounting bracket of the hard disk controller board. 4. Lift the board up and remove it from the computer chassis. 5. Place the hard disk controller board on a clean, flat, static-free surface. 6. Locate the EPROM chip that is currently installed at U14 on the hard disk controller board. Notice that the chip has a notch in it that matches a notch in the white outline drawn around the chip's socket. NOTE: If the socket at U14 is completely covered by the chip installed in it, then reverse this procedure to re-install the hard disk control- ler board. Your controller board already has the new EPROM. 7. Carefully insert a small, flat-blade screwdriver between the EPROM chip and its socket, being careful not to bend any of the EPROM's pins. Set this chip aside in a safe place. Again, note the white outline drawn around the socket for your EPROM and the little notch drawn in at one end of the outline. NOTE: The EPROM you removed is smaller (24 pins) than the one that will replace it (28 pins). 8. Install the new EPROM by tilting the chip above the socket so that the pins on one side are about 1/32" into their holes, and the pins on the other side are just above their holes. With the pins on the inserted side directed into their holes, gently push the pins into their respective holes. Continue to push gently until each pin fits snugly into a hole in the socket. 9. If you miss a hole or bend a pin on your EPROM, remove the chip, straighten the pin, and reinsert the EPROM. 10. Slide the hard disk controller board back into the slot from which it was removed. Secure it by replacing the screw in the top of the board's mounting bracket. 11. Re-attach the 34 pin control cable to connector J1 on the hard disk controller board. Re-attach the 20 pin control cable to connector J2 on the hard disk controller board. 12. You are now ready to proceed with the installation of the TCS-100 Interface Board. 13. Once the TCS-100 Interface Board is properly installed and before replacing the computer's cover, the system should be tested. 14. Plug the keyboard back into the computer and replace the computer's power connection. 15. Make sure that there are no foreign objects inside the computer. When satisfied of this, turn the computer's power on. 16. If the computer boots up and appears to operate normally, then you have made a successful EPROM exchange. You can now power down the computer, replace the computer cover and proceed with the TCS-100 Installation procedure. If the computer does not boot up, then you will need to start over with step number 1 of "REMOVING THE HARD DISK CONTROLLER", to double check your work. (smm/jej-05/12/94)
