300 BPS ModemFone 100 (260-1386) Commands Faxback Doc. # 5992 TELEPHONE OPERATION NOTE: Before proceeding, if you have not already made all necessary connections to your Modemfone 100, refer to Appendix A for installation instructions. To use the Modemfone 100's telephone capabilities, set the function switch to the TELEPHONE position. SETTING THE DIALING MODE (TOUCH-TONE/PULSE DIALING) To determine the proper setting for the TONE/PULSE switch, you must first find out if your phone line is a rotary or touch-tone type. Here's how: 1. Connect the Modemfone 100. 2. Set the TONE/PULSE switch to TONE (be sure that the function switch is at the TELEPHONE position). 3. Lift the handset to get a dial tone. 4. Press any of the number keys. 5. If the dial tone continues, you are on a rotary-type line; set the switch to PULSE. 6. If the dial tone stops, you have a touch-tone line; keep the switch set to TONE. The DIALING indicator will light whenever the handset is lifted. The touch-tone mode is necessary to communicate with special service equipment, such as bank-by-phone or alternate long distance services. You can do this (even if you are on a rotary line) by dialing the original special service number in the pulse mode, and then switch to TONE) when you need to access the special service equipment. You will find more about this in the next section, DIALING A NUMBER. NOTE: You can not change to the PULSE mode from the TONE mode when operating in the touch-tone mode. To make this change, you must first hang up the handset and slide the TONE-PULSE switch to PULSE; then lift the handset and place your call in the pulse mode. DIALING A NUMBER Lift the handset and use the keys to enter the desired number. If you need to communicate with tone access equipment (alternate line distance, etc.) after reaching the desired number in the pulse mode, change the TONE-PULSE switch to the TONE position; then press the required keys. To return to the pulse mode, hang up the handset and move the TONE-PULSE switch back to the PULSE position. NOTES: 1. In the pulse mode, there will be a short pause after you have entered the numbers. 2. If you're familiar with a regular touch-tone phone system, don't be alarmed when you get the same tone every time you press a key in the pulse mode. This is normal; the tone only verifies key entry in the pulse mode. In the touch-tone mode, you will hear the same DTMF (Dual-Tone, Multi-Frequency) tones as those on a regular touch-tone phone. ADDING A PAUSE TO A NUMBER If you are using your Modemfone 100 in an office (or anywhere that requires an access code for outside calls), you will need to add a pause to allow time for the outside line to connect. When you use the PAUSE button during dialing, the Modemfone 100 pauses for about 4 seconds and then continues dialing the number you have pressed. In the touch-tone mode, you will hear no tone if you press keys while the pause is in effect; yet, the Modemfone 100 will remember the number you dialed. When the pause is over, you will hear the tones that correspond to the keys you pressed during the pause. The pause duration is cumulative--if you press PAUSE twice, the duration will be 8 seconds. Each PAUSE entry counts as one digit in the redial memory capacity. REDIALING Redial is a very handy feature of the Modemfone 100. This feature stores the last dialed number into temporary redial memory. If you dial a number and get a busy signal, all you have to do is hang up, pick up the handset again, and press the REDIAL button. This can be repeated as many times as you like, as long as you don't dial any other phone number. The number is stored in the redial memory as soon as you finish pressing the keys (even if you don't let it finish dialing or ring the number called). The Modemfone 100 will redial a number in the mode in which it was entered (pulse/touch-tone), regardless of the current mode setting. NOTE: If you change modes during dialing, redialing will stop at the point where this change occurs. Press REDIAL once more to continue redialing. If you press PAUSE during dialing, there will be a 4-second pause at that point; then dialing will automatically continue. SETTING THE RINGER SELECT SWITCH Your Modemfone 100 uses an electronic tone ringer in place of a bell. Set the RINGER select switch to HI to produce a sound that is about as loud as that of a regular telephone. This is the normal position. Set the switch to LO for a quieter tone. If you do not want the phone to ring, set the RINGER select switch to the OFF position. You can still answer the phone or place calls while this switch is set to OFF. NOTE: The RINGER switch does not affect the monitoring signal in data communications at all. DATA COMMUNICATIONS Follow the procedures below to start data communications using the Modemfone 100. Check all connections. The Modemfone 100 should be connected to a computer and to an AC power supply, as well as to the telephone line. Find out the communications protocol of the computer or other device with which you are going to communicate. Specifically, you will need to know: * Word length * Parity * Number of stop bits * Who will use the originate mode * Who will use the answer mode NOTE: The baud rate of the Modemfone 100 is 300 bps, so be sure to use a baud rate of 300 bps. Set up your computer accordingly, and set the Modemfone 100's mode switch to ANSWER or ORIGINATE, whichever is appropriate. Communications parameters must be set to match those of the computer on the other end before communi- cations can take place. If you need assistance in setting the communications protocol (baud rate, word length, parity, and stop bit number) of your com- puter, refer to your computer owner's manual. OPERATING IN ORIGINATE MODE 1. Set the mode switch to the ORIGINATE position. 2. Set the function switch to the TELEPHONE position. Lift the handset and dial the number of the host computer. 3. Change the function switch position to MONITOR or MODEM when you hear the carrier tone. The MODEM indicator lights. Hang up the handset. As you might remember, you can monitor the data transmission and reception pro- gress by carrier tone if you select the MONITOR function. 4. When the CARRIER DETECT indicator lights, you can start communicating. The transmitted and received signals can be heard if the function switch is set to MONITOR position. 5. Be sure to sign off when communications are finished. 6. After signing off, slide the function switch back to the TELEPHONE position. OPERATING IN ANSWER MODE 1. Set the mode switch to the ANSWER position. The function switch should be set at the TELEPHONE position. 2. Wait for the remote computer operator to call you. 3. Upon receiving the call, change the function switch to MONITOR or MODEM. The MODEM indicator lights. 4. When the CARRIER DETECT indicator lights, begin data communications. 5. When finished with the data transfer, slide the function switch back to the TELEPHONE position. NOTE: Be sure to set the function switch to TELEPHONE every time you finish data communications. You can not place/receive a call or conduct normal telephone conversations with the switch set to the MONITOR or MODEM posi- tion. SWITCHING TO TELEPHONE MODE You can conduct normal telephone conversations before and after data communications without disconnecting the telephone line. Pick up the handset and dial the number of the remote computer. Discuss communications protocol with the remote computer operator. Then set the mode switch to ORIGINATE or ANSWER, as appropriate, and make any other necessary preparations. Change the function switch to the MONITOR or MODEM position and hang up the handset. After data communications are over, pick up the handset and change the function switch to the TELEPHONE position. NOTE: You have to pick up the hand set before changing the function switch; otherwise, the phone line will be disconnected. USING THE MODEMFONE 100 WITH VIDEOTEX SOFTWARE A modem that is connected to a Tandy computer running a videotex software package constitutes one of the most common ways to use your modem. This section describes how to use the Modemfone 100 with VIDTEX (the videotex program) on most Tandy computers. 1. Connect the system as described in Appendix A. Be sure the mode switch is set to ORIGINATE. 2. Load and run your version of VIDTEX. 3. With the function switch set to the TELEPHONE position, dial the information service's telephone number and listen for a high-pitched tone. Set the function switch to the MONITOR or MODEM position.
