Car Alarm (490-0720) Operation Faxback Doc. # 6257 This alarm system detects unauthorized entry into a vehicle in two ways: The motion sensor sets off the alarm if it detects movement. The voltage drop sensor sets off the alarm if someone opens the trunk, hood (if the vehicle has an underhood light), a door that turns on the dome light, or does anything else to make one of the vehicle's lights turn on. When violated, the system sounds the alarm for 90 seconds, then resets and is ready for the next violation. You can silence the alarm when it is sounding by pressing DISARM on the remote control transmitter. Several of the system's features let you control how it works. For example, you can control the motion sensor's sensitivity or turn the system off completely. You can disarm the system so the siren does not sound. You can even turn off the alarm system so it does not automatically arm. TURNING THE SYSTEM ON AND OFF The system is normally on, so it automatically arms when you leave the vehicle. However, you might not want the system to arm for valet parking or car repair. To turn off the system, first disarm it by pressing DISARM on the remote transmitter once. Then press DISARM three times within 3 seconds. The system chirps once after the first two times, and chirps three times after the third. ARMING THE SYSTEM Arming the system sets the alarm to sound. Before you arm the system, be sure it is turned on. Automatic Arming Note: The following assumes that all doors turn on a light when opened. If your vehicle has doors that do not turn on a light when opened, those doors do not affect automatic arming. If you do nothing after you turn off the ignition, the alarm chirps in 60 seconds, indicating it is armed. Opening a door causes the alarm to sound. If you open a door before 60 seconds has elapsed, the alarm's timer starts a new 60-second countdown. Sixty seconds after the last door is closed, the alarm system chirps to confirm it is armed. The indicator flashes. When you return to your vehicle, use the remote control to disarm the alarm system before entering the vehicle. Remote Arming The remote control has a range of up to 50 feet (See "Remote Control Range"). To arm the system from outside the vehicle, press ARM on the remote control. While you hold down ARM, the remote control's indicator lights. The red status indicator lights and a tone sounds when the system arms. DISARMING THE SYSTEM Press the remote control's button once. While you hold down DISARM, the remote control's indicator lights. The siren chirps twice when the system disarms. When the alarm sounds, you can silence it by disarming it. The system also has a violation memory. If the siren sounded, when you return and disarm it, it sounds four chirps to let you know the alarm was triggered. SETTING THE MOTION SENSOR'S SENSITIVITY The control module has a sensor that responds to shock or sudden vehicle movement. For example, if someone breaks the glass or hits your car with a stick, rock, or hammer, the siren sounds. You can adjust the sensor's sensitivity according to your needs, from very sensitive (so even a slight movement or impact triggers the siren) to very insensitive (so a lot of movement or impact is needed to trigger the siren). Follow these steps to adjust the sensitivity. 1. Disarm the alarm system. 2. With your fingers or a screwdriver, carefully remove and save the rubber plug on the back of the main control module. 3. Use a screw driver to turn the screw slowly and gently, taking care not to force it too far in either direction. Turn the screw counterclockwise (toward MIN) to decrease the sensor's sensitivity, clockwise (toward MAX) to increase it. 4. Arm the alarm system and wait 3 seconds. Then test the setting by pushing on the bumper or closing the door to jolt the car until you are satisfied with the sensitivity level. 5. Replace the rubber plug. Note: Failure to replace the plug voids the alarm's warranty. SOUNDING THE PANIC ALARM This feature lets you summon help in an emergency. To sound the panic alarm, press either of the remote buttons for 2 seconds. Note: Seek help as quickly as possible. If you are away from your car, stay in a safe place until you are sure there is no danger. THE SYSTEM STATUS INDICATOR The red indicator flashes when the system is armed. It lights steadily during the 3-second arming delay. It flashes rapidly if the alarm has sounded. REMOTE CONTROL RANGE Because each installation and vehicle type is different, the remote control's range varies at different locations around the vehicle. Test the remote control's range by alternately arming and disarming the system at different distances from the vehicle and from all sides. Know your alarm systems capabilities. When the remote control's battery becomes weak, the control range decreases. Replace the remote control's battery. (RLR/smc-05/18/94)
