ET-385 (430-0570) Installation/Preparation Faxback Doc. # 6278 Select a location for the telephone's base that is: 1. Near an AC outlet 2. Near a telephone jack 3. Away from electrical machinery, metal walls or filing cabinets, and electrical appliances 4. Out of the way of normal activities 5. Away from wireless intercoms, alarms and room monitors Experiment with several locations to find the one that provides the best reception and range. You can place the base on a flat surface or mount it on a wall. See "Mounting the Base." BASE CONNECTING TO THE TELEPHONE LINE The phone comes with a modular telephone line cord with a modular plug at each end. Plug one end of the cord into the base's telephone line connection jack. Then, plug the cord's other end into a standard single-line modular telephone jack. If the telephone line does not have the proper jack, you can Obtain the proper jack or adapter at your local Radio Shack store and install it yourself. Have the telephone company install the proper jack. Notes: The telephone company is authorized to charge you for the installation of the jack. If the telephone company installs the telephone jack, they might ask you for the number for the required jack. This number is RJ-11C (or RJ-11W for a wall mount installation). EXTENDING THE TELESCOPING WHIP ANTENNA The base has a telescoping whip antenna. Extend the antenna to its full length and adjust it for the best reception. WALL-MOUNTING THE BASE You can mount the telephone's base on a standard telephone wall plate or directly on a wall, using two screws with heads that fit into the base's keyhole slots. You can get a telephone wall plate and the short modular cord needed for wall mounting at your local Radio Shack store. To mount the base on a standard wall plate: 1. Plug one end of the modular cord into the base's telephone cord connection jack. Then, route the cord through the base's recessed groove. 2. Insert the AC adapter's barrel plug into the base's DC 6V jack and route the adapter's cord through the base's strain-relief slot. 3. Plug the other end of the modular cord into the wall plate's jack. 4. Place the base's keyhole slots over the wall plate's two metal studs and push down on the base to lock it into place. 5. Plug the AC adapter's AC module into a standard AC 120V electrical outlet. The base's power indicator lights to show that the base is on. The base is inoperative during a power failure. To mount the base directly on the wall: 1. Choose the desired mounting location and drill two holes 3 15/16 inches (100 mm) apart. 2. Screw the screws into the wall, letting the heads extend about 1/8 inch (3 mm). 3. Plug one end of the modular cord into the base's telephone line connection jack. Then, plug the cord's other end into the modular wall jack. 4. Plug the AC adapter's barrel plug into the base's DC 6V jack and route the cord through the base's strain-relief slot. 5. Place the base's keyhole slots over the two screws and push down on the base to lock it into place. 6. Plug the AC adapter's electrical connection into a standard AC 120V electrical outlet. REMOTE UNIT INSTALLING/REPLACING THE BATTERIES The remote unit requires three C batteries for operation. We recommend Radio Shack's alkaline batteries (Cat. No. 23-551). Under normal circumstances, alkaline batteries last a maximum of 9 months, but you should periodically test the batteries by pressing battery test button. If the battery test indicator does not light or is dim, replace the batteries. 1. Remove the remote unit's battery compartment cover by pushing down on its grooved tab and sliding the cover outward. 2. Remove any old batteries and dispose of them properly. 3. Install three fresh alkaline batteries into the battery compartment, observing the polarity symbols (+ and -) marked in the compartment. 4. Replace the battery compartment cover. INSTALLING THE HANDSET CORD The phone's remote unit comes with a coiled handset cord that extends from the remote unit's cradle. To connect the cord to the handset, plug the end of the cord into the handset cord connection jack. Note: Because of Federal Communications Commission Rules, the coiled handset cord is permanently attached to the remote unit's cradle and cannot be replaced with a different cord. SETTING THE RINGER HI/LO SWITCH Set the RINGER HI/LO switch to the preferred volume level. MOUNTING THE REMOTE UNIT ON A WALL You can mount the remote unit directly on a wall or on a standard telephone wall plate. To mount the remote unit on a telephone wall plate, place the remote unit cradle's keyhole slots over the wall plate's two metal studs and push down on the cradle to lock it into place. To mount the remote unit on a wall: 1. Drill two holes 3 15/16 inches (100 mm) apart. 2. Screw the screws into the wall, letting the heads extend about 1/8 inch (3 mm). 3. Place the cradle's keyhole slots over the two screws and push down on the cradle to lock it into place. 4. Pull out and rotate the handset hook so that you can hang the handset on the remote unit's cradle. (BR/smc-05/03/94)
