AFX-160 (430-1241) Installation Faxback Doc. # 6283 INITIALIZING THE FAX SWITCH/CONNECTING TO POWER After you install the backup batteries for the first time, initialize the fax switch as follows. Caution: Make sure all of the fax switch's modular jacks are unplugged before initializing the fax switch. 1. Plug the adapter's barrel plug into the fax switch's DC 12V jack. 2. Plug the fax switch's AC adapter into a standard 120-volt AC power outlet. The POWER/IN USE indicator lights yellow. Caution: You must use a Class II, 120V AC/12V DC adapter that delivers at least 400 milliamps. Its center tip must be set to negative and its plug must correctly fit the fax switch's DC jack. The supplied adapter meets these requirements. Using an adapter that does not meet these requirements could damage the fax switch or the adapter. 3. Wait about 10 seconds, then disconnect the adapter from the AC outlet. 4. Wait about 10 seconds, then reconnect the adapter to the AC outlet. 5. Route the AC adapter cord through the fax switch's strain relief slot. CONNECTING THE FAX SWITCH TO THE PHONE LINE 1. Plug one end of the fax switch's modulator cord into its LINE jack, and plug the other end into a modular (RJ11) telephone line jack. The POWER/IN USE indicator steadily lights red. Note: If the telephone line does not have a modular jack, you must update the wiring. You can convert the wiring yourself, using jacks and adapters available at the local Radio Shack store, or you can have the telephone company update the wiring for you. The telephone company will charge you for the installation of the necessary jacks. The telephone company will ask you for the USOC number of the jack to be installed. This number is RJ11C (or RJ11W for wall plate installation). 2. Plug the fax machine or fax modem's modular plug into the fax switch's FAX jack. 3. If you want to connect an answering machine to the fax switch, connect the answering machine's modular plug to the fax switch's TAD jack. Also, see "Using the Fax Switch with an Answering Machine" 4. If desired, mount the fax switch on a standard modular wall plate or directly on a wall using two screws (not supplied). You can connect the fax switch to the telephone line using a short modular cord and route the cord through the slot on the back. USING THE FAX SWITCH WITH AN ANSWERING MACHINE When you use the fax switch with an answering machine, set the fax switch's ringer setting to a number higher than the answering machine's ring number setting. For example, if you set the answering machine to answer calls after the fourth ring, set the fax switch to answer after the fifth, sixth, or seventh ring. Change the answering machine message to include instructions for callers who want to send a fax. For example: "Hello, You have reached 555-4567. Please leave your name and phone number at the tone, and we will return your call. If you want to send us a fax and you have a touch-tone phone, press one, the pound sign, and then one on your telephone to activate the fax machine. Thank you for calling" NOTE: If the answering machine's message interferes with the fax switch's function, re-record the message and speak more softly. (SMC/all-7/11/94)
