Vehicle Alarm System (490-0722) Care and Maintenance Faxback Doc. # 6340 CARING FOR YOUR SYSTEM Your vehicle Alarm System with Starter Kill and Pager is an example of superior design and craftsmanship. The following suggestions will help you care for the alarm system so you can enjoy it for years. Keep the alarm system dry. If it gets wet, wipe it dry immediately. Liquids might contain minerals that can corrode and short the electronic circuits. Use and store the transmitter and main control module in normal temperature environments. Temperature extremes can shorten the life of electronic devices, damage batteries, and melt plastic parts. Handle the system gently and carefully. Dropping it can damage the circuit boards and cause the system to work improperly. Keep the transmitter and main control module away from dust and dirt, which can cause premature wear of parts. Wipe the transmitter, main control module, and indicator module with a damp cloth occasionally to keep them looking new. Do not use harsh chemicals, cleaning solvents, or strong detergents to clean the system. Use only fresh batteries of the required size and type. Always remove old or weak batteries. They can leak chemicals that can destroy electronic circuits. Modifying or tampering with the system's internal components can cause a malfunction and might invalidate the system's warranty and void your FCC authorization to operate it. If your system is not performing as it should, take it to your local Radio Shack store for assistance. THE FCC WANTS YOU TO KNOW Your alarm system might cause TV or radio interference even when it is operating properly. To determine whether your system is causing the interference, turn off your system. If the interference goes away, your system is causing the interference. Try to eliminate the interference by: Moving your system away from the receiver. Contacting your local Radio Shack store for help. If you cannot eliminate the interference, the FCC requires that you stop using your system. REPLACING THE FUSE If the alarm stops working, follow these steps to see if the fuse is blown. 1. Disconnect your vehicle's negative battery cable. 2. Hold the fuse holder by both ends. 3. Push the fuse holder ends together, then turn and release either end. The fuse holder opens. 4. If the fuse has blown, replace it with a 5-amp fuse of the same type and rating (Cat. No. 270-1007). 5. Hold the fuse holder by both ends. 6. Push the fuse holder ends together, then turn either end. The fuse holder closes. 7. Reconnect your vehicle's negative battery cable. Then follow the steps under "Setting Security Codes" to set your system to use your remote key-chain transmitters. REPLACING THE REMOTE ARM/DISARM TRANSMITTER'S BATTERY The remote arm/disarm transmitter requires a 12-volt type 23A alkaline battery, such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-144. Replace the battery if the indicator fails to light when you press either ARM or DISARM, or if the transmitter's range is reduced. 1. Remove the screw from the back of the transmitter and lift off the case. 2. Remove the old battery and discard it immediately. Warning: Never allow children to play with batteries. Swallowing a battery could be fatal. 3. Insert a new battery as indicated by the polarity symbols (+ and -) marked inside the battery compartment. 4. Replace the case and secure it using the screw.
