System 208 (430-0616A) Installation Faxback Doc. # 6352 INSTALLING/REPLACING THE BATTERIES Two AAA batteries (Cat. No. 23-584) protect the numbers in memory. NOTE: Be sure to disconnect the telephone cord from the wall's telephone jack before your install or replace batteries. The phone's memory holds memory information for about 5 minutes. If you do not install/replace the batteries within this time, the phone might lose any information in memory. 1. Remove the screw on the battery compartment using a Phillips head screwdriver and open the compartment. 2. Remove old batteries and insert two fresh AAA batteries (Cat. No. 23-584), positioning them according to the polarity (+ and -) marked in the compartment. WARNING: Incorrect battery installation can damage the phone. 3. Close the battery compartment cover and secure the screw. To protect the stored numbers, check the batteries periodically. Set MEM STORE-BATTERY TEST/NORMAL to MEM STORE-BATTERY TEST. When the battery needs replacing, the BATTERY TEST indicator does not light. SELECTION A LOCATION Select a location where the wires are not in the way of normal activities. Be sure that it is near both a telephone jack and an AC outlet. CONNECTION THE AC ADAPTER 1. Plug the AC adapter plug into the jack on the back of the unit. CAUTION: Use only the supplied DC 9-volt 200mA class II adapter with your System 208. Another type of adapter might damage the unit. To prevent damage to the unit or the adapter, plug the adapter into the System 208 before plugging the adapter into the wall. 2. Plug the AC adapter into an AC 120-volt outlet. 3. Route the cable from the AC adapter through the strain relief slot, as shown. CONNECTING TO THE PHONE LINES Plug the modular cable coming from the System 208 into an RJ-14 two-line jack. If you have only one line, you must order the other line from the telephone company. An RJ-14 jack looks identical to a regular single-line modular jack, but it is wired differently. If only Line 1 works after you complete the installation, the second line has not been wired to the jack. If this is the case, or if your telephone does not end in an RJ-14 jack, you can: a. Pay the telephone company to update the wiring of you telephone system. NOTE: The phone company will ask you for the USOC number of the jack to be installed. This number is RJ-14C (or RJ-14W for a wall installation). b. Update the wiring yourself. The local Radio Shack store sells the jacks and adapters necessary to convert from the older wiring methods. c. Connect the System 208 to two RJ-11 (single-line) jacks, using a two-line coupler (Cat. No. 279-401). IMPORTANT: The intercom uses the wiring of Line 1 to operate. Be sure Line 1 is wired to the same phone number for all stations. WALL MOUNTING THE TELEPHONE The System 208 can be mounted on the wall. Follow these steps: 1. Move the bracket from its storage area to the wall-mount socket, as shown. 2. Mount a standard wall plate at the desired location, or screw the two screws, into the wall 3 15/16 inches (100 mm) apart, aligned vertically. The lower screw should extend 5/64 inch (2 mm) from the wall and the upper screw should extend 15/64 inch (6 mm). Do not overtighten the screws. If you use a wall plate, you can use a short line cord (Cat. No. 279-390) to make installation easier. 3. Align the keyholes on the back of the unit with the two screws and press down to secure the telephone to the wall. 4. Lift the handset guide and rotate it. This prevents the handset from falling off the cradle. (CJD/smc-04/21/94)
