System 208 (430-0616A) Troubleshooting Faxback Doc. # 6353 If the System 208 is not operating properly, going through this checklist might save you time and money. 1. Is the unit properly connected? 2. Is the TONE/PULSE switch set correctly? 3. Have other phones on the same line been picked up? In areas of low telephone voltage, this unit might not operate when other phones are active on the same line. Hanging up the other phone should correct the problem. 4. Are the RJ-14 jacks wired properly? 5. Is Line 1 wired the same on all units? 6. Can you hear other conversations during your call? If this happens only occasionally, this is normal on some telephone networks. If the problem is frequent, ensure that the telephone jacks were wired correctly, using twisted-pair telephone cable. If flat, modular telephone cable is used for an extension over 25 feet, this "crosstalk" occurs. Wiring the jacks correctly, using the recommended type telephone cable, should correct the problem. IF YOU STILL HAVE PROBLEMS Disconnect the unit immediately! If other phones on the same line function properly, the problem is in the unit or its installation. If you are unable to locate the problem, bring the unit to your local Radio Shack store for assistance. THE FCC WANTS YOU TO KNOW It is very unlikely...but the telephone company has the right to temporarily discontinue your service if the System 208 causes problems on the phone line. The telephone company notifies you and gives you a chance to have the problem corrected if this happens. Also, the telephone company has the right to make changes in its lines and/or equipment. The telephone company notifies you in writing if these changes affect your System 208 or require changes in its connection, so you can take the necessary steps to ensure uninterrupted service. Lightning The System 208 has built-in surge protection circuits. These circuits meet or exceed FCC requirements to reduce the risk of damage from surges in telephone and AC power line current. A lightning strike near, or directly to, these lines can cause an excessive surge of voltage that can damage the telephone. Lightning damage is uncommon, but it can occur to phones and other electronic devices. We suggest that you unplug your electronic products during storms if you live in an area with frequent and/or severe electrical storms. (CJD/smc-04/26/94)
