TAD-276 (430-0762) Operation Faxback Doc. # 6373 SETTING THE TAD TO ANSWER CALLS Set STOP/ON to ON so 00 appears on the display. The TAD is ready to answer calls. NOTES: If you have not recorded the first outgoing announcement, the TAD continuously beeps. You must record an outgoing announcement before you can record calls. Many local phone companies use calling party control (CPC) to signal that the caller has hung up. Your TAD can recognize a CPC signal and release the line. If the TAD records phone company messages or dial tones, your local phone company probably does not use CPC. When the caller hangs up, the maximum message length of about 60 seconds is up, or there are more than 7 seconds of silence, the TAD hangs up and resets to answer the next call. If the incoming message tape reaches the end while a caller is leaving a message, the TAD beeps twice and hangs up. If the TAD Answers a call after the incoming message tape is full, the TAD plays the second announcement. If the second message is not recorded, the TAD only plays the first outgoing announcement after ten rings and then hangs up. SETTING THE TAD TO NOT ANSWER CALLS If you do not want the TAD to answer any calls, set the STOP/ON switch to STOP. The indicator turns off and -- appears on the display. NOTE: Even if you have set STOP/ON to STOP, you can use a remote phone to set the TAD to answer calls. CALL SCREENING To screen your calls, let the TAD answer all calls for you, and listen to the caller's message through the TAD's speaker. If you decide to answer the call, pick up any phone connected to the same phone line as the TAD. The TAD stops recording and resets for the next call. NOTE: If you pick up the phone just as the TAD answers, the TAD might not stop recording. If this happens, hang up the phone and pick it up again. PLAYING MESSAGES The display shows the number of messages the TAD has recorded. To listen to the messages, press PLAY. TAD beeps, and the indicator turns off. The incoming tape rewinds to its beginning, IP appears on the display, and the TAD plays the messages. At the end of each message, the TAD announces the day and time the message was recorded. At the end of all the messages, the TAD beeps twice. The tape automatically rewinds to the beginning and the display shows 00. During playback you can pause, rewind, or fast forward the incoming message tape. To pause playback, set STOP/ON to STOP, -- appears on the display. To resume playback, set STOP/ON to ON again, IP appears on the display. Press and hold REWIND to rewind the tape. Release REWIND to resume playback. Press and hold FAST-F to fast forward the tape. Release FAST-F to resume playback. If the tape reaches the end of all the new messages, two beeps sound. Within 3 seconds you can press REWIND to rewind the tape to the desired position. After you play the messages, the TAD automatically resets to answer calls. If you want to save the messages, see "Saving Messages." To replay the messages, simply press PLAY again. SAVING MESSAGES Press and hold SAVE for about two seconds until the indicator turns off and the TAD beeps. The MC-60 tape fast forwards to the end of all the new messages. The original number of messages appears again on the display and all messages are saved. RECORDING OVER OLD MESSAGES After you listen to all the messages, the TAD automatically rewinds the incoming message tape and resets to answer calls. Unless you save messages, the new messages record over the old ones. NOTE: The only way to erase old messages without recording new ones is by remote operation. BYPASSING THE OUTGOING ANNOUNCEMENT Callers can bypass the outgoing announcement and leave a message immediately. To offer them this option, in your outgoing message instruct callers to press 2 during playback of the outgoing announcement. USING THE TOLL SAVER When you call the TAD long distance, if you have new recorded messages (ones you have not played), the TAD answers after about two rings. If not, the TAD waits for about four rings before it answers. This gives you time to hang up before the TAD answers so you can avoid unnecessary long distance charges. USING THE ANNOUNCEMENT-ONLY MODE You can set your TAD to the announcement-only mode so it does not record callers' messages. This is ideal for providing meeting notices and similar information. Remove the MC-60 tape, unplug the supplied adapter, wait about 5 seconds, and plug it in again. Only the second outgoing announcement plays when the TAD answers calls. NOTE: You must re-record the first outgoing announcement before you change the second outgoing announcement. You cannot change only the second outgoing announcement. To return to the normal answer mode, return the MC-60 tape to the incoming message tape compartment. Dis- connect the supplied adapter, wait about 5 seconds, then plug it in again. The TAD conducts a self test and resets to answer calls. RECORDING A MEMO To record a message for someone in your home or office, follow these steps. 1. Press MEMO once, -1 appears on the display 2. When the indicator lights steadily and the TAD beeps, begin record- ing the message. Speak in a strong voice about 12 inches from the microphone. 3. When you finish speaking, press MEMO again. The TAD beeps twice and the number on the display increase by 1. Your memo is recorded just like an incoming message and plays back with the incoming messages. RECORDING A PHONE CONVERSATION You can record both sides of a conversation on any phone connected to the same phone line as the TAD. At any time during the conversation, press and hold 2-WAY RECORD for about 2 seconds. The indicator turns off and -2 appears on the display. Then recording begins. To stop recording press 2-WAY RECORD again 00 appears on the display and the TAD beeps twice. Recording stops. Your phone conversation is recorded just like an incoming message and plays back with the incoming messages. NOTES: It is illegal in some states to record a conversation without the consent of all parties to the conversation, including the phone company. Check the laws in your area before using the two-way record feature. (CJD/all-07/14/94)
