TURNING ON THE SCANNER/SETTING VOLUME AND SQUELCH

1.  Turn VOLUME clockwise until you hear a hissing sound.

2.  Turn SQUELCH fully clockwise.  (the hissing sound stops).

3.  Slowly turn SQUELCH counter-clockwise until you again hear a hissing
    sound.

4.  Slowly turn SQUELCH clockwise until the hissing stops.

The scanner automatically begins scanning channels.  Press MANUAL to stop
scanning.

NOTE: If the scanner picks up unwanted, partial, or very weak
      transmissions, turn SQUELCH clockwise to decrease the scanner's
      sensitivity to these signals.  Turn SQUELCH counterclockwise if you
      want to listen to a weak or distant station.

STORING FREQUENCIES

Follow these steps to store a frequency into a channel.

1.  Press MANUAL and enter the channel number you want to program.

2.  Press PROGRAM. PROGRAM appears on the display with the channel
    number you entered in Step 1.

3.  Enter the frequency you want to store into the channel.

4.  Press E to store the frequency.

NOTES:  If you made a mistake in Step 3, ERROR appears on the display.
        Press CLEAR and repeat Steps 3 and 4.

        The scanner automatically rounds the entered frequency to the
        nearest valid frequency.  For example, if you try to enter a
        frequency of 151.473, the scanner accepts it as 151.475.

5.  Repeat Steps 1-4 to store more frequencies into channels.

NOTE:  If you want to store frequencies into consecutive channel
       numbers, repeat Steps 2-4.

To delete a frequency you stored, store a new frequency in place of the
old one.

SEARCHING FOR AND TEMPORARILY STORING ACTIVE FREQUENCIES

Good references for active frequencies are Radio Shack's "Police Call
Radio Guide Including Fire and Emergency Services," "Aeronautical
Frequency Directory," and "Maritime Frequency Directory."  We update these
directories every year, so be sure to get a current copy.

If you do not have a reference to frequencies in your area, use these
procedures to search for a transmission.

Limit Search

Limit search lets you search within a range of frequencies you select L -
appears on the display during a limit search.

1.  Press PROGRAM, then press LIMIT.

    PROGRAM, Lo and the minimum frequency range (29.0000 MHz) appear on
    the display.

2.  Enter the frequency that is the lower limit of the frequency range
    you want to search, press E, then press LIMIT.

PROGRAM Hi, and the maximum frequency range (512.0000 MHz) appear on the
display.

3.  Enter the frequency that is the upper limit of the frequency range
    you want to search, then press E.

4. Press (Down arrow) to search from the upper to the lower limit or
   press (Up arrow) to search from the lower to upper limit.

NOTES:  If you made a mistake in Step-2 or 3, ERROR appears on the display.
        Press CLEAR and repeat the step.

        After you press DOWN Arrow or UP Arrow to start the search, the
        blinking number to the right of MON indicates the current monitor
        memory.

5.  When the scanner stops on a transmission, you can press MONITOR to
    store the frequency into the current monitor memory, or press UP
    Arrow or DOWN Arrow to continue the search.

Direct Search

When you listen to a channel, you can search up or down from the
currently displayed frequency, d - appears on the display during a direct
search.

1.  Press MANUAL, enter the channel number that contains the frequency
    you want to start the search from, then press MANUAL or PROGRAM.

2.  Press DOWN Arrow or UP Arrow to search down or up from the selected
    frequency.

NOTES:  If you made a mistake in Step 1, ERROR appears on the display.
        Press CLEAR and repeat Step 1.

        After you press DOWN Arrow or UP Arrow to start the search, the
        blinking number to the right of MON indicates the current monitor
        memory.

3.  When the scanner stops on a transmission, you can press MONITOR to
    store the frequency into the current monitor memory, or press DOWN
    Arrow or UP Arrow to continue the search.

LISTENING TO MONITOR MEMORIES

Monitor memories are temporary storage areas you use to store frequencies
while you decide whether to save them into channels.  You can manually
select monitor memories, but you cannot scan them.

After you DOWN Arrow or UP Arrow to start a limit or direct search, the
blinking number to the right of MON on the display indicates the current
monitor memory.

To listen to a monitor memory, press MANUAL, MONITOR, then the number of
the monitor memory you want to listen to.

MOVING A FREQUENCY FROM A MONITOR MEMORY TO A CHANNEL

Monitor memories are temporary storage areas.

Follow these steps to move a frequency from a monitor memory to a
channel.

1.  Press MANUAL.

2.  Enter the channel number you want to store the monitor frequency in,
    then press PROGRAM.

3.  Press MONITOR.  The channel number flashes.  Enter the monitor
    memory number that contains the frequency you want to store.

4.  Press E.  The scanner stores the frequency in the selected channel.

MANUALLY SELECTING A CHANNEL

You can continuously monitor a specific channel without scanning.  This
is useful if you hear an emergency broadcast on a channel and do not want
to miss any details - even though there might be periods of silence - or
if you want to monitor a specific channel.

Follow these steps to manually select a channel.

1.  Press MANUAL.

2.  Enter the channel number.

3.  Press MANUAL again.

Or, if the scanner is scanning and stops at the desired channel, press
MANUAL one time (Pressing MANUAL additional times causes your scanner to
step through the channels).

Scanning the Channels

To reactivate automatic scanning after monitoring a specific channel,
press SCAN.  The scanner scans through all non-locked channels in the
activated banks (See "Locking Out Channels.")  Adjust SQUELCH to
eliminate the hissing sound that occurs between transmissions.

DELAY

Many agencies use a two-way radio system that might have a pause of
several seconds between a query and a reply.

When the scanner pauses at an active channel which has been programmed
with a delay, it waits for two seconds after the completion of each
transmission on that channel before it resumes scanning.

To program a two-second delay into a channel to keep from missing a
reply, select the channel, then press DELAY, DELAY appears on the
display.

LOCKING OUT CHANNELS

You can increase the effective scanning speed by locking out channels you
have not yet programmed, or channels that have a continuous transmission,
such as a weather channel.

To lock out a channel, manually select the channel and press LOCKOUT so
LOCKOUT appears on the display.  You can manually select or use direct
search or limit search on frequencies assigned to locked-out channels.

To remove the lockout from a channel, manually select the channel and
press LOCKOUT so LOCKOUT disappears from the display.

NOTE:  You cannot lock out all channels.  There must be at least one
       active channel in each bank.

TURNING CHANNEL-STORAGE BANKS ON AND OFF

You can turn each of the 10 channel-storage banks on or off while
scanning.

While scanning, press the number key corresponding to the bank you want
to turn on or off.  If a bank is on, BANK and the bank number are
displayed, and the scanner scans all channels within that bank that are
not locked out.  If a bank is off, BANK is displayed, but the bank number
is not displayed, and the scanner does not scan any of the channels
within that bank.

You can manually select or use direct search and limit search on a
frequency assigned to any channel in a bank, even if the bank is turned
off.

NOTE:  You cannot turn off all banks.  There must be at least one active
       bank.

PRIORITY

You can scan through the programmed channels and still not miss an
important or interesting call on a specific channel.

To program one stored channel as the priority channel, press PROGRAM, the
desired channel number, then PRIORITY.  P displays to the left of the
channel number of the priority channel.

Then, to turn on the priority feature, press PRIORITY during scanning.
The scanner now checks the priority channel every two seconds, and stays
on the channel if there is activity, PRIORITY is displayed whenever the
priority feature is turned on.

NOTE:  Channel 1 is the default priority channel.

To turn off the priority feature, press PRIORITY until PRIORITY
disappears from the display.

LISTENING TO THE WEATHER BAND

The FCC (Federal Communications Commission) has allocated 11 channels for
use by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).  We
have preprogrammed the scanner with 7 of the U.S. frequencies available
to NOAA.  To hear the local forecast and regional weather information,
simply press WX.  The scanner scans through the preprogrammed weather
channels.

The scanner should stop within a few seconds, and you hear the local
weather broadcast.  If the broadcast is weak, you can press WX again to
scan through the rest of the weather band.

NOTE:  You can still tune and scan weather channels that are not
       preprogrammed.
