ET-496 (430-1001) Operation Faxback Doc. # 6502 CONFIRMATION AND ERROR TONES When you press a button, a tone sounds to let you know the phone accepted the command. If you hear a short, low-frequency tone, the phone did not accept the command because you were out of range or there was too much interference. Try the command again from a location closer to the base. MAKING/ANSWERING A CALL For the best reception, fully extend the base's antenna and place it in a vertical position. To make a call, pick up the handset and press TALK. When you hear a dial tone, dial the telephone number. When you are finished, press TALK, to hang up. Return the handset to the base, if you are close enough to do so. NOTE: If you place the handset on the base without pressing TALK to hang up, the phone automatically hangs up. The next time you pick up the handset, the phone will be automatically on. To answer a call, simply lift the handset from the base (or press TALK if it was not on the base). When you pre-finished, return the handset to the base (or press TALK to hang up). NOTES: If you accidentally press TALK within 2-3 seconds after lifting the handset, the phone ignores your command. After 2-3 seconds, you can disconnect the line by pressing TALK. If the call is first answered on an extension phone and you lift the cordless handset 10 seconds after the last ring, you may need to press TALK to answer the call. USING RINGER ON/OFF Set RINGER ON/OFF to OFF to conserve battery power. The ET-496 will not ring; however, other phones on the same line will ring if you have not disabled their ringers. USING FLASH Many special phone services require a switchhook signal. You can send a switchhook signal by pressing and releasing the switchhook, but pressing FLASH sends the same signal more accurately and conveniently. For example: If you subscribe to call waiting, press FLASH to put one call on hold and take another call. NOTES: Do not use TALK to access calling services. This could disconnect the call. Do not use FLASH to hang up the phone. USING REDIAL To quickly redial the last number you dialed, simply press REDIAL when you hear a dial tone. NOTES: The redial memory holds up to 63 digits, so you can redial long-distance as well as local numbers. When you redial a number that includes FLASH, only the numbers after the FLASH entry are redialed. For example, if you dialed 1 2 3 4 FLASH 5 6 6, pressing REDIAL will only redial 5 6 7. USING TONE SERVICES ON A PULSE LINE Some special services (such as electronic banking, calling cards, telephone answering equipment, etc.) require tone signals. If you have pulse service, you can still use these special tone services. 1. Be sure TONE PULSE is set to PULSE. 2. Dial the service's main number. 3. When the service answers, press *. Any additional numbers dialed will be sent as tone signals. 4. When you complete the call and hang up, the phone automatically resets to the pulse mode. (CJD/smc-05/10/94)
