Model 36 (160-0706) Special Functions Faxback Doc. # 6529 The following information describes some of the Model 36's special display, search, and indexing functions. TAPE MOTION The tape motion display shows you the tape-motion mode (fast forward, reverse, etc.) during playback or recording. FREEZE-FRAME Freeze-frame lets you stop the action and view a single frame. Press PAUSE/STILL during playback to freeze the picture. Press PLAY to return to normal playback. During freeze-frame, the picture is a lower quality than during normal playback. Results are best with tapes recorded at the SP speed. Playing a Tape Notes: If you leave the VCR in the freeze-frame mode for 5 minutes, it automatically stops the freeze-frame mode and the VCR. In NTSC and PAL modes, the VCR digitally processes the freeze- frame picture. For a cassette recorded in the MESECAM system, repeatedly press PAUSE/STILL until you get the best picture. In MESECAM SP mode, the noise bar might be heavy and you might not be able to completely eliminate it. RECORD PAUSE Use PAUSE/STILL during recording to edit out unwanted material, such as commercials. Press PAUSE/STILL at the beginning of the unwanted material. The tape temporarily stops. Press RECORD again to resume recording. Notes: Pressing PAUSE/STILL during automatic timer recording has no effect. If you leave the VCR in the record-pause mode for more than 5 minutes, the VCR automatically enters the stop mode. PICTURE CONTROL When you play back a tape recorded on another VHS video device, the picture quality might not be adequate. Turn PICTURE on the VCR as needed to obtain the picture quality (softer or sharper) you desire. INDEX SEARCH When you start recording, your VCR automatically marks the tape with an index signal (but not when you resume recording from the record pause mode). You can quickly locate a specific recording on the tape by using index search. To locate the next index while in stop mode, press PLAY and FAST-F or PLAY and REWIND on the VCR at the same time. The VCR enters the visual search mode and stops at the next index signal. Note: The remote control cannot be used for index search. TAPE COUNTER WITH MEMORY Use the counter and memory functions to mark and return to specific locations on a tape. To use either function, first press CLOCK/COUNTER to display the tape counter. Note: To use the counter most effectively, always rewind tapes to the beginning before you play them. Press COUNTER RESET to set the counter to 0000. As you record or play a tape, note the counter reading at the locations you want to return to. If you start at the beginning of the tape with a counter reading of 0000, the next time you play the tape, the counter should be the same (plus or minus a few counts) for the same locations on the tape. Use the memory function to return to a specific location on a tape using REWIND. 1. Reset the counter at a tape location you want to return to; the counter displays 0000. Then continue recording or playback. 2. Before you return to the selected location, press MEMORY until MEMO appears on the display. 3. Press STOP and then REWIND. The VCR stops when the counter returns to about 0000. FAST-FORWARD/REWIND AND VISUAL SEARCH Use FAST-F and REWIND when the VCR is stopped to move the tape quickly in the desired direction. You cannot see the tape picture or hear the tape sound when you use FAST-F or REWIND, but you can use the counter and memory functions to locate specific sections of the tape. To use visual search, begin regular playback of a tape. Then press FAST-F to search forward, or press REWIND to search in reverse. Press PLAY to return to normal playback. Note: When you want to use visual search, set OUTPUT SELECT to THRU. Otherwise the picture quality during visual search will be extremely poor. During visual search, the sound is muted and the picture is a lower quality than during normal playback. You can shift the position of the noise bar by repeatedly pressing CHANNEL/TRACKING-/+. TRACKING When you set AUTO TRACKING on the VCR to ON, the automatic tracking function is in effect, and the VCR automatically adjusts tracking for the best possible picture. While tracking adjustment is in progress, the AUTO TRACKING indicator flashes. Depending on your tape's condition, the automatic tracking system might not work well. In this case, set AUTO TRACKING to OFF/MANUAL and the AUTO TRACKING indicator goes off. Then press CHANNEL/TRACKING-/+ to obtain the clearest picture. AUTOMATIC REWIND SYSTEM When the tape ends during manual recording, playback, or fast-forward, it automatically rewinds to the beginning (or to the 0000 counter reading if the memory function is activated).
