Model 36 (160-0706) Multi-System Functions Faxback Doc. # 6532 There are three major color systems for TV and video equipment in the world. The standard American system is NTSC3.58, and the other two are PAL and SECAM. Typically, you must use an NTSC system to play cassettes recorded using NTSC; the same is true for PAL and SECAM. NTSC PAL SECAM USA, Canada, Japan, England, Italy, Austria Iran, Iraq, Commonwealth Korea, Mexico, the Australia, Germany, of Independent States, Philippines, Holland, Kuwait, Hungary, France, Taiwan Singapore, Switzerland, Bulgaria, Poland, Monaco Sweden, Spain, Thailand, Luxembourg People's Republic of China, Denmark, New Zealand Norway, Belgium, Portugal, Hong Kong CAN THE MODEL 36 PLAY OR RECORD IN ANY OF THE THREE SYSTEMS? Almost... The Model 36 does not have "true" SECAM capability but rather MESECAM. This gives the VCR its dual PAL/SECAM compatibility. If you play back a cassette recorded in SECAM, the image might lose its color, although you can still view it. Likewise, a cassette recorded using the Model 36's, MESECAM system becomes monochrome when played back on a SECAM VCR. Note that the VCR's built-in tuner is based on the NTSC system. You cannot receive PAL or SECAM signals with the Model 36 itself. If you have a TV with A/V output jacks that receives PAL or SECAM signals, you can record them on the Model 36 once you correctly connect the VCR to the TV. Also note that there are two NTSC systems, NTSC3.58 and NTSC4.43 The difference between them is that the signal that carries color information is in different frequencies, 3.58 MHz or 4.43 MHz. The 3.58 frequency is more common, so normally you would use this setting of the SYSTEM button. If the color is gone when you are using an NTSC cassette on an NTSC-43 TV, use the NTSC4.43 setting. The following chart illustrates which multi-system functions the Model 36 can or cannot perform. Play a tape recorded in NTSC, PAL, or SECAM Yes Receive NTSC broadcast signals with the VCR's tuner Yes Receive PAL or SECAM broadcast signals with the VCR's tuner No View/Record PAL or SECAM signals by connecting Yes a PAL or SECAM video device to the Model 36's INPUT jacks. Record NTSC broadcasts using the VCR's tuner Yes Record PAL or SECAM broadcasts using the VCR's tuner No Dub a PAL or SECAM cassette to an NTSC cassette Yes Dub an NTSC cassette to a PAL cassette Yes The following sections explain more specifically how to use the Model 36's different multi-system functions. Notes: When the color system of the TV differs from that of the original recording, the converted image will be of a lesser quality. Always set SYSTEM to match the signal connected to the Model 36's A/V INPUT jacks. When you switch between tapes recorded in different color systems, at first the sides of the image might be cut off. The picture soon returns to normal. Depending on the quality of the input signals for the tape, a "blank bar" might appear in the converted picture. If the quality worsens, the picture might blank out completely or freeze. When the quality improves, the picture will be restored. Any time you use visual search when the tape's color system differs from that of the TV, the picture might become distorted or lose its color. When you dub a PAL or SECAM tape from the Model 36 to another NTSC VCR, a "Blank bar" might be recorded on the dubbed copy. When you dub a PAL or SECAM cassette to NTSC using another Model 36, the blank bar will not be recorded. PLAYING A CASSETTE RECORDED IN A DIFFERENT COLOR SYSTEM Be sure OUTPUT SELECT is set to NTSC if you connected your TV to the AUDIO/VIDEO OUTPUT jacks of the Model 36. Play the tape as you normally would. The Model 36 automatically detects the color system of the recorded cassette, except for NTSC4.43. If you are playing an NTSC tape and the picture has no color, press SYSTEM until the NTSC4.43 indicator lights. VIEWING PAL OR SECAM SIGNALS ON AN NTSC TV Using the Model 36, you can view signals on an NTSC TV from a PAL or SECAM device as you play or record them. This function requires a PAL or SECAM video device (i.e., a PAL or SECAM TV with A/V output jacks, VCR, or laser-disc player) 1. Connect the audio and video output jacks of the PAL or SECAM video device to the AUDIO/VIDEO INPUT jacks on the Model 36. 2. If your TV has A/V input jacks, connect the Model 36's AUDIO/VIDEO OUTPUT jacks to your TV's A/V input jacks. Otherwise, connect the VCR's RF OUT terminal to your TV's VHF/UHF input terminals. 3. Press SYSTEM until the PAL/MESECAM indicator lights. 4. Set OUTPUT SELECT on the VCR to NTSC and set the TV's TV/video switch to video. 5. Press INPUT SELECT on the VCR until LINE appears on the display. Then view or record the signal. Important: The recording is made using the original color system (PAL or MESECAM), or in NTSC. When monitoring recording, the sides of the picture might look shrunken, but the recording is made correctly. VIEWING SIGNALS WITH A PAL SYSTEM TV All of these functions require a PAL TV with A/V input/output jacks. TO VIEW A CASSETTE RECORDED IN NTSC, PAL, OR SECAM 1.
