Hi-Performance Stereo Cass. (120-1944) Installation Faxback Doc. # 6580 Before you begin installation, remove the transit screw on top of the stereo. ROUTING SPEAKER WIRE If you install speakers, avoid routing the speaker wire near moving parts or sharp edges. You can usually route it along the wiring channel beneath the vehicle's door facing by carefully removing the molding that holds the carpet in place. After you route the speaker wire, replace the molding. SETTING THE SHAFT SPACING Before you begin installation, compare the spacing between the stereo's shafts with the openings on your vehicle's dashboard. The stereo's shaft spacing is factory-set to 5 19/32 inches (142mm). If the shaft spacing does not fit the dashboard openings, adjust the shaft spacing as follows. 1. Loosen the nuts on both shafts until you can pull the claws from the holes on the fitting surface. 2, Move the claws to the other holes as needed, so that the shaft spacing matches the openings in the dashboard. 3. Tighten the nuts. MOUNTING THE STEREO Before you mount the stereo, study the illustration, and be sure you have all the necessary materials before you begin. Be sure you have tested the stereo to be sure it works properly. Follow these steps to mount the stereo. 1. Secure one end of the supplied metal strip to the back of the stereo using a hex bolt. 2. Install the supplied spacing washers and nuts on the shafts so that the stereo's nosepiece lines up with the front trim. 3. Place the gasket over the nosepiece. Then, install the hex nuts and flat washers on the shafts. 4. Fit the stereo through the holes in the dashboard. Then, secure the front trim panel to the dashboard using the flat washers and nuts. 5. Secure the other end of the attached, metal strip to the dashboard, firewall, or floorboard using either the supplied self-tapping screw or a bolt and nut (not supplied). Bend the strip, if necessary. 6. Install the shaft cover on the shafts. If the cover is too long, cut it to fit the length of the shaft. 7. Carefully place the control knobs on the shafts by aligning the protrusion on the inside of the knob with the gap in the shaft. Caution: Do not force the control knobs onto the shafts. This might damage the knobs. MOUNTING THE REMOTE CD INPUT TERMINAL Your stereo's remote CD input terminal lets you connect a portable CD player to your stereo. Follow these steps to mount the remote CD input terminal. 1. Select the desired mounting position. Be sure the mounting position is easy to reach. 2. If necessary, screw the nut housing onto the CD terminal housing. 3. Use the supplied self-tapping screws (1PT 3x88) to mount the CD player terminal. CONNECTING A COMPACT DISC PLAYER To connect a portable CD player to the stereo, use a stereo 1/8-inch mini- plug cable (not supplied). Connect one end of the cable to the stereo's CD input terminal. Connect the cable's other end to the CD player's line- out jack. Note: When you plug the cable into the stereo's CD terminal, you cannot hear the radio and cassette player operate. Be sure to disconnect the CD player when you are using it. (LB/all-07/12/94)
