SCP-64 (140-1204) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 6587 SUPPLYING POWER You can use one of three sources to power the SCP-64: * internal batteries * standard AC power (with an optional adapter) * your vehicle's cigarette-lighter socket (with an optional adapter) To power the SCP-64 from internal batteries, follow the steps below. To power the SCP-64 from standard AC power AC power or your vehicle's cigarette-lighter socket. Using Internal Batteries You need two AA batteries to power the SCP-64. We recommend alkaline batteries, such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-552. You can also use rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries (Cat. No. 23-125). If you use rechargeable batteries, you also need a battery charger (such as Cat. No. 23-133). Caution: Do not mix nonrechargeable and rechargeable batteries in the SCP-64. Follow these steps to install batteries. 1. Press down on the battery compartment cover and slide it off in the direction of the arrow. 2. Install the batteries as indicated by the polarity symbols (+ and -) marked next to the compartment. 3. Replace the cover. Note: Your cassette player is capable of using rechargeable nickel- cadmium batteries. At the end of the batteries' useful life, they must be recycled or disposed of properly. Contact your local, county, or state hazardous waste management authorities for information on recycling or disposal programs in your area. Some options that might be available are: municipal curbside collection, drop-off boxes at retailers, recycling collection centers, and mail-back programs. USING HEADPHONES OR SPEAKERS To listen to the SCP-64, you need a pair of headphones (not supplied) or amplified speakers (not supplied) with a 1/8-inch plug. You can find a wide selection of headphones and speakers at your local Radio Shack store. Connecting Headphones/Speakers Insert the headphones' or speakers' 1/8-inch plug into the SCP-64's headphones jack. Listening Safely To protect your hearing, follow these guidelines when you use headphones. * Set the volume to the lowest setting before you begin listening. After you begin listening, adjust the volume to a comfortable level. * Do not listen at extremely high volume levels. Extended high-volume listening can lead to permanent hearing loss. * Once you set the volume, do not increase it. Over time, your ears adapt to the volume level, so a volume level that does not cause discomfort might still damage your hearing. Traffic Safety Do not wear headphones while operating a motor vehicle or riding a bicycle. This can create a traffic hazard and is illegal in some areas. Even though some headphones are designed to let you hear some outside sounds when listening at normal volume levels, they still present a traffic hazard. USING THE BELT CLIP The belt clip lets you keep your hands free while you listen to the SCP- 64. To attach the belt clip to the SCP-64, slide the belt clip into the slot on the cassette player until it locks into place. Slide the belt clip over your belt or waistband. To remove the belt clip from the SCP-64, push down on the belt clip and slide it off in the direction of the arrow. (LB/all-07/11/94)
