System 710 (130-1253) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 6634 SETTING UP THE SYSTEM Warning: Do not connect the System 710 to AC power until you make all other connections. Follow these steps to set up the System 710: 1. Plug the cable with the black connector from the equalizer/tuner's CONTROL A outlet into the power amplifier/cassette deck's CONTROL A jack. Note: Do not force the connector. If it does not fit one way, turn it over and try again. 2. Plug the cable with the red connector from the equalizer/tuner's CONTROL B jack. 3. Plug the cable with blue connector from the equalizer/tuner's CONTROL C outlet into the CD changer's CONTROL C jack. CONNECTING THE SPEAKERS To help you properly connect speaker wires, one conductor of each pair of wires is marked with a stripe or groove and the wires are different colors. Follow these steps to connect your System 710 to the speakers: 1. Separate the conductors for a length of about 4 inches from the end. 2. Strip 1/4 inch of insulation from each conductor's end. Then twist the ends of each conductor. 3. Press the speaker terminal tabs labeled RIGHT on the back of the system 710. 4. Insert the right speaker's striped wire into the negative (-) terminal and the other wire into the positive (+) terminal. 5. Release the speaker terminal tabs to lock the wire in place. 6. Repeat these steps for the left speaker. Note: If you incorrectly connect the speaker wires, bass sound decreases. CONNECTING ADDITIONAL SPEAKERS You can connect an additional pair of speakers (not supplied) for surround-sound operation. Be sure the speakers have an impedance of at least 8 ohms. Your local Radio Shack store has a wide selection of speakers. CONNECTING THE ANTENNAS When you tune to local AM and FM stations, you use the supplied AM loop antenna and indoor FM antenna. For better FM reception, connect an outdoor FM antenna. Connecting the AM Loop Antenna Follow these steps to connect the AM loop antenna: 1. Twist the antenna wires' stripped ends. 2. Press both AM ANTENNA terminal tabs on the back of the System 710 and insert the antenna wire ends into the holes. The release the tabs. 3. Position the antenna for the best reception. If necessary, use the supplied screws to hang the antenna on the wall. Connecting the supplied FM Antenna The supplied FM antenna is usually adequate for FM reception in metropolitan areas. If FM reception is weak, disconnect the FM antenna from the terminal on the back of the System 710, and connect an outdoor antenna. If you install an outdoor antenna, follow all directions and safety precautions that comes with the antenna. Use 300-ohm twin lead or 75-ohm coaxial cable for this connection. Your local Radio Shack store sells a complete line of outdoor antennas and accessories. Follow these steps to connect the supplied FM antennas: 1. Insert the antenna's plug into the FM antenna terminal. 2. Position the antenna for the best reception. Notes: If you use 75-ohm coaxial cable with your antenna, connect the outer conductor to the GND side of the 75 OHM FM ANTENNA terminal and the inner conductor to the other terminal. If you use a 300-ohm antenna cable, use a 300-to-75-ohm matching transformer available at your local Radio Shack store. CONNECTING AUXILIARY AUDIO SOURCES Connecting a Turntable Follow these steps to connect a turntable to the System 710. 1. Plug the turntable's left and right audio cables into System 710's PHONO jacks. 2. If the turntable has a ground wire, connect it to the GND terminal next to the PHONO jacks. Connecting a VCR 1. Plug the VCR's audio output cables into the System 710's VCR IN jacks. 2. Plug the VCR's audio input cables into the System 710's LINE OUT jacks. CONNECTING TO POWER To connect the System 710 to a power source, plug its AC cord into a standard household outlet. INSTALLING THE REMOTE CONTROL'S BATTERY The remote control requires two AA batteries (not supplied) for power. We recommend alkaline batteries, such as Radio Shack's Cat. No. 23-552. Note: If the remote control operates poorly or does not work, replace the batteries. Follow these steps to install the batteries. 1. Press the batteries compartment cover's tab and slide off the cover in the direction of the arrow 2. Insert the batteries, observing the polarity symbols (+ and -) marked in the compartment. 3. Replace the battery compartment cover. SETTING THE CLOCK Before you can use the System 710's built-in timer, you must set the clock to the timer, you must set the clock to the correct time.
