System 710 (130-1253) Cassette Faxback Doc. # 6638 USING THE CASSETTE DECK Use only normal or CrO2, high-quality tapes. You local Radio Shack store sells a complete selection of blank tapes. You can use your cassette deck for normal play, continuous play, recording, or dubbing. This cassette deck also has Dolby B/C noise reduction. Notes: Before you load a cassette, take up any tape slack by turning the tape hub with a pencil or your finger. If you have played a cassette several times, the tape can become tightly wound on either hub. This causes distortion. To restore normal tension, fast-forward the entire tape, then completely rewind it. NORMAL TAPE PLAY Follow these steps to play a tape: 1. Press PUSH EJECT on TAPE 1 or 2 to open the cassette compartment door. 2. Insert a pre-recorded cassette with the tape's open end down and full reel to the left. Gently close the compartment door. 3. If the tape was recorded with DOLBY NR, set DOLBY NR to the appropriate setting (B or C). If the tape was not recorded with DOLBY NR, set DOLBY NR to OUT. 4. Press TAPE OPERATION 1 or 2 to select the deck you want to use. The selected button lights. Notes: You must load a tape into the tape deck before you select it. The tape decks automatically determine the tape type by using the tape's sensing holes. Be sure the sensing holes are not blocked. 5. Press > to start to play the tape side which is facing out or < to start to play the other tape side. The tape direction indicator lights. 6. Press the black rectangle to stop the tape. CONSECUTIVE PLAY You can set the tape player to play both sides of the tape in TAPE 1, then automatically play both sides of the tape in TAPE 2. 1. Load cassette tapes in TAPE 1 and 2. 2. Press TAPE OPERATION 1 to select TAPE 1. 3. Press > to play the tape in TAPE 1. After both sides play, the tape player automatically plays both sides of the tape in TAPE 2. 4. Press the black rectangle to stop the tape. Note: If you do not press the black rectangle, continuous play repeats 4 times, then automatically stops. NORMAL RECORDING 1. Press FUNCTION to select the audio source you want to record (tuner, CD, PHONO, or VCR). 2. Load a blank tape or one you want to record over into TAPE 2. 3. Press TAPE OPERATION 2 to select TAPE 2. 4. Set DOLBY NR to B or C to record with Dolby noise reduction. 5. Press REC PAUSE. REC lights and the tape direction indicator flashes to indicate that the deck is in recording pause mode. 6. Press > to start recording. 7. Start the audio source (tuner, CD, phono or VCR). Note: To temporarily stop recording, press REC PAUSE. Press > or < to resume recording. 8. Press the black rectangle to stop recording. Note: If you try to use a tape with the erase-protection tabs removed, the tape deck cannot enter the recording pause mode. Do not try to force down REC PAUSE. Use another tape or cover the erase- protection holes. RECORDING FROM A CD Follow the steps under "Normal Recording" to record a CD or choose from three special recording methods to record a CD disc. You must use the remote control for the three special recording methods. * Edit Fade-fades out at each end of the tape. * Edit Time-edits the selections into 2 programs that fit on each side of the tape. * Cross Edit Fade-similar to the edit function, with the addition of automatic fade out/fade in between tracks for smooth transition. Notes: Four-second blank spaces are automatically inserted between tracks during edit fade and edit time recordings. If the CD changer has not read the disc data, play the disc for a few seconds so the changer can read the data. Edit Fade Recording Follow these steps to record with edit fade: 1. Load the CD you want to record from into the CD changer and press FUNCTION to select CD. 2. Load a blank tape into TAPE 2. Select TAPE 2. 3. Press EDIT until EDIT FADE flashes on the display. 4. Press PROG. EDIT FADE stops flashing and TOTAL REMAIN lights. 5. Press PLAY/PAUSE on the CD changer. Recording and CD playback start. At the end of the tape's first side, the sound fades out and recording continues on the other side. Note: The track that was faded out on the first side is recorded again in its entirety at the beginning of the other side. 6. Press STOP on the CD changer to stop recording and playback. To cancel edit fade recording, press CLEAR. If the tape counter displays, press DISPLAY on the remote control to cancel the tape counter display. If you press CLEAR during recording, recording stops, but the CD continues to play. Edit Time and Cross Edit Fade Recording 1. Load the CD you want to record from into the CD changer and press FUNCTION to select CD. 2. Load a blank cassette tape into TAPE 2. Select TAPE 2. 3. Press EDIT until EDIT TIME (for edit recording) or EDIT CROSS (for cross edit fade recording) flashes on the display. 4. Press PROG. TOTAL REMAIN appears and C-4 flashes. 5. Set the recording length of the tape you plan to use. For example, when using C-60 tapes, press + 10 until C-6 appears on the display. Then press 0. C-60 appears and the CD changer then edits the CD's selections into A and B programs. The display shows the remaining time and the track numbers to be recorded on side A. Press >> for CD on the remote control to check the remaining time and number of tracks on side B. Press << to return to the display for Side A. 6. Press PLAY/PAUSE to start recording. The tape rewinds to the beginning and automatically starts recording. When recording on one tape side is over, the tape changes direction and recording continues on the other side. 7. Press STOP on the CD player to stop recording and playback. 8. To cancel edit time or cross edit fade recording, press CLEAR. Note: If you press CLEAR during recording, recording stops but the CD continues to play. DUBBING (COPYING) A TAPE To monitor the cassette as you dub it, press FUNCTION to select TAPE. Follow these steps to dub (copy) from one cassette tape to another. Notes: If the original tape was recorded using Dolby NR, the copy you make will also have Dolby NR, regardless of the DOLBY NR switch position. If the original tape was not recorded using Dolby NR, you cannot add it to the new tape you record. The recording level is preset. Adjusting any control does not affect the recording level. 1. Load the tape you want to copy into TAPE 1 with the tape's full reel to the left and the side you want to play first facing you. 2. Load a blank tape, or one you want to record over, into TAPE 2. Be sure the side you first want to record onto faces you and the full reel is to the left. Note: Use only normal or CrO2 tape for recording. 3. Make sure the tape direction on both decks is set to forward. 4. Select the dubbing speed. If you want to listen to the tape as you dub it, press * DUBBING START SPEED NORM. To dub the tape in half the time, press * DUBBING START SPEED HIGH. If you selected DUBBING START SPEED HIGH, the program sounds high-pitched during recording because of the higher recording speed, but sounds normal during playback. CHANGING THE DECKS To change from TAPE 1 to TAPE 2 or vice versa, press TAPE OPERATION 1 or 2. You must have tapes loaded in both decks. FAST-FORWARD/REWIND Use this chart to fast-forward or rewind the tape. AUTO STOP The tape deck automatically turns off when the tape's other side (facing away from you) reaches the end or when TAPE 2 reaches its end or during connective play. USING THE TAPE COUNTER You can use the tape counter to quickly locate a specific location on the tape. To alternate between the clock and tape counter, press DISPLAY on the remote control. When the tape counter displays, it advances as you play or record a tape. At the tape or selection's beginning, reset the counter to 0000 by pressing CLEAR on the remote control. OTHER FEATURES Automatic Search Music System (ASMS) You can make the tape deck search for and play the track you want. The deck can search up to 30 selections in either direction from the current point of playback. During playback, count the number of selections from the current track to the track you desire. If you are counting ahead, count the next track as one. If you are counting backward, count the current track as one. Press >> or << the number of tracks you count. The tape rewinds or fast-forwards to the selection you want and plays. The tape direction indicator flashes while the search is in progress. Note: The ASMS function might not work properly if you press >> or << too close to the start or end of a selection. Intro SCAN Intro scan plays back the first 10 seconds of each selection so you can find the track you desire. Press > and >> (or < and << for intro scan on reverse side) on the front panel at the same time. Intro scan begins and the tape direction indicator flashes. Press > to start playback of the selection. Note: You cannot use remote control for the intro Scan. Auto Play Auto play automatically rewinds the cassette to the beginning and starts playback. Press > and << (or > and >> for reverse side) on the front panel simultaneously. The tape direction indicator flashes while rewind is in progress. When the tape reaches the beginning, playback automatically begins. Note: You cannot use the remote control for Auto Play, Auto Space During recording, you can use the auto space function to make a 4 second blank space between selections for proper operation of ASMS or intro scan. 1. Press AUTO SPACE at the point where you leave a blank section. The play indicator lights and REC flashes to indicate that auto space is active. After leaving a 4 second blank space, the deck enters recording standby mode. The play indicator flashes. 2. Press > (or < when recording on the reverse side of the tape) to resume recording. You can use the auto space feature to erase long portions of a tape. Press REC PAUSE to enter the recording standby mode, and then press AUTO SPACE twice. The play indicator lights and REC flashes quickly to indicate auto space is active. Auto space continues until the cassette reaches the end or you press the black rectangle. (LB/all-06/28/94)
