SCR-59 (140-1205) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 6652 SUPPLYING POWER You can power your SCR-59 from any of three power Sources: * Internal batteries * Standard AC power (with an optional adapter) * Your vehicle's cigarette-lighter socket (with an optional adapter) Using Internal Batteries You can power the SCR-59 with two AA batteries. We recommend alkaline batteries, such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-552. Or, you can use rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries (Cat. No. 23-125). If you use rechargeable batteries, you also need a battery charger (Cat. No. 23-133). Caution: Do not mix nonrechargeable and rechargeable batteries in the SCR-59. 1. Press down on the battery compartment cover and slide it off in the direction of the arrow. 2. Install the batteries as indicated by the polarity symbols (+ and -) marked beside the compartment. 3. Replace the cover. If the BATTERY/RECORD indicator lights steadily during playback, the batteries are weak. When the batteries completely run out, the indicator does not light at all. Note: The recorder is capable of using rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries. At the end of the batteries' useful life, they must be recycled or disposed of properly. Contact your local county, or state hazardous waste management authorities for information on recycling or disposal programs in your area. Some options that might be available are: municipal curbside collection, drop-off boxes at retailers, recycling collection centers, and mail-back programs. Using AC Power To power the SCR-59 from an AC outlet, you need an AC adapter (not supplied), such as Cat. No. 273-1654. Note: Connecting an optional adapter disconnects the internal batteries. Caution: You must use an adapter that supplies 3 volts DC power and delivers at least 300 milliamps. Its center tip must be set to negative, and its plug must properly fit the SCR-59's DC 3V jack. Using an adapter that does not meet these specifications could damage the SCR-59 or the adapter. 1. Set the adapter's voltage switch to 3V. 2. Attach the black-tipped barrel plug to the adapter's cord to read TIP NEG. 3. Insert the plug into the SCR-59's DC 3V jack. This disconnects the internal batteries. 4. Plug the adapter into a standard AC outlet. Using Your Vehicle's Cigarette-Lighter Socket You can power the SCR-59 from your vehicle's cigarette-lighter socket. This connection requires a DC adapter (not supplied, such as Cat. No. 270 -1560. Note: Connecting an optional adapter disconnects the internal batteries. Cautions: The vehicle must have a 12-volt DC, negative-ground electrical system. To protect the vehicle's electrical system, always plug the adapter into the SCR-59 before you plug it into the cigarette- lighter socket. Always unplug the adapter from the cigarette- lighter socket before you unplug it from the SCR-59. You must use an adapter that supplies 3 volts DC power and delivers at least 300 milliamps. Its center tip must be set to negative, and its plug must properly fit the SCR-59's DC 3V jack. Using an adapter that does not meet these specifications could damage the SCR-59 or the adapter. Follow these steps to power the SCR-59 from your vehicle's cigarette- lighter socket. 1. Set the adapter's voltage switch to 3V. 2. Plug the orange-tipped barrel plug into the adapter's cord with the tip set to negative (-). 3. Insert the barrel plug into the SCR-59's DC 3V jack. 4. Plug the other end of the adapter into the vehicle's cigarette-lighter socket. CONNECTING HEADPHONES/SPEAKERS You need a pair of headphones or amplified speakers with a 1/8-inch plug to listen to tapes in stereo. Your local Radio Shack store sells a wide selection of stereo headphones and speakers. Insert the headphone's/speakers',1/8-inch plug into the recorder's PHONES jack. Listening Safely To protect your hearing, follow these guidelines when you use headphones. * Set the volume to the lowest setting before you begin listening. After you begin listening, adjust the volume to a comfortable listening level. * Do not listen at extremely high volume levels. Extended high volume listening can lead to permanent hearing loss. * Once you set the volume, do not increase it. Over time, your ears adapt to the volume level, so a volume level that does not cause discomfort might still damage your hearing. Traffic Safety Do not wear headphones while operating a motor vehicle or riding a bicycle. This can cause a traffic hazard and is illegal in some areas. Even though some headphones are designed to let you hear outside sounds when listening at normal levels, they still present a traffic hazard. ATTACHING THE CARRYING CASE AND SHOULDER STRAP Follow the arrows to thread the strap through the strapholders on the supplied carrying case. Insert the SCR-59 into the carrying case. Then lock it into place by securing the strap holes over the brads. (br/all-6/28/94)
