DMP-207 (260-2917) Control Panel Faxback Doc. # 6678 The control panel at the front of the printer lets you easily control paper handling functions as well as adjust the printer's default settings. The control panel consists of two indicator lights and three control keys. INDICATORS The control panel has two indicators that monitor the printer's status: the ON LINE light and the POWER/PAPER OUT light. The ON LINE light is lit when the printer is on line; it is dark when the printer is off line. The POWER/PAPER OUT light is lit when the printer is on and ready for use. It flashes when the printer is out of paper, or paper is jammed in the printer. It is dark when the power switch is off. CONTROL KEYS The control panel has three control keys: the ON/OFF LINE key, LOAD/PARK key, and the LF/FF key. ON LINE AND OFF LINE MODES Press the ON/OFF LINE key to toggle between on line and off line modes. When the printer is "on line"--its normal operating mode--it can receive data from your computer. Your printer cannot receive data when it is "off line." When off line, the printer responds only to control-panel instructions. LOADING AND EJECTING PAPER Whenever you print a document, the DMP-207 automatically loads a sheet of paper to the top-of-form position and begins printing. When that page is printed, the DMP-207 ejects the page and, if needed, loads another page and continues printing. You can also load or eject it from the control panel. When the printer is off line, pressing the LOAD/PARK key loads a sheet of paper into the printer. The automatic sheet feeder inserts a sheet into the printer and moves it to the top-of-form position. If a sheet is already in the printer, the DMP-207 ejects the sheet when you press the LOAD/PARK key. ADVANCING THE PAPER The LF/FF key performs a similar paper-handling function. When the printer is off line, pressing the LF/FF key loads a sheet of paper to the top-of- form position. If a sheet is already loaded in the printer, however, the paper advances 1 line space each time you press the LF/FF key. If the LF/FF key is held for 2 seconds, a form feed command is sent to the printer, and the sheet is ejected. Note that these paper handling functions operate only when the printer is off line. If you press the LF/FF key when the printer is on line, the printer enters the top-of-form fine adjustment mode. SETUP MENU SYSTEM The Setup Menu System is a unique feature for viewing, adjusting, and saving the printer's default settings. Our engineers chose this method instead of dip switches, allowing you to customize your printer from the control panel. Settings you make on the Setup menu are stored as a macro in the printer's permanent memory. (A macro is a complete set of printer settings that describes the entire printer default environment.) This macro remains in the printer's memory when you turn off the printer's power. Its settings are automatically restored when you turn the printer power back on. If your software sends commands that override the Setup (default) settings, you can restore the settings by sending the master reset command (Esc @) to the printer from your software. Turning the printer power off and on also resets the printer to its menu settings. CHANGING DEFAULT SETTINGS To enter the Setup menu, press the MENU key for 3 seconds while the printer is on line. (Be sure there is no data in the print buffer.) The DMP-207 prints the Setup Menu System instructions followed by the options in the first menu. It underlines the current setting in this menu, and awaits your instructions. You'll find it easier to see the printed menus and the option that the printhead is pointing to if your remove the top cover. To use the Setup Menu System, move the automatic feeder levers forward to open the automatic sheet feeder. To change the current setting, press the SELECT key until the setting you want appears directly to the left of the printhead just above the ribbon. Then press the SET key to select the new setting. The printer fills in the new setting and advances to the next menu. If you are happy with the current setting, simply press the EXIT key. The printer retains the current setting, advances to the next menu, prints the next menu's options, underlines the current setting, and awaits your instructions again. You can advance to the next menu without making changes by pressing the EXIT key--even if you have moved the printhead with the SELECT key. However, as soon as you select a new setting by pressing the SET key, that setting is stored in the printer's permanent memory. Continue through the menus until you have made all the changes you want. The printer automatically exits the Setup menu system when you press the EXIT key at the last menu. After you exit the Setup Menu System, move the automatic feeder levers back to close the automatic sheet feeder. The Setup Menu saves all the settings you selected with the SET key in the printer's memory. They become the printer's new default settings and take effect the next time you power up the printer. Default settings are only read during power up. The old default settings remain in effect until you turn off the power. If you want to print with your new default settings, turn the printer power switch off and then on again. PRINTING DEFAULT SETTINGS The Setup Menu System allows you to print a report of the current default settings. The DMP-207 menus are printed down the page. The options within each menu are printed across the page with the current default setting underlined. To print the default report, turn on the printer power switch while simultaneously holding down the LF/FF and LOAD/PARK keys. (LG/all-06/28/94)
