DMP-207 (260-2917) Maintenance Faxback Doc. # 6687 The DMP 207 printer was designed to give you long and trouble-free service with minimal operator care. Consequently, maintenance procedures for this printer are few and simple. If you followed the suggestions in Chapter 1 for locating your printer in a clean, climate-controlled area, and give a little regular attention to the items covered in this appendix, you will get the best possible performance from this sturdy printer. Changing the ribbon cassette Cleaning Alarms Troubleshooting Running test sheets Changing the ribbon cassette The ribbon in the cassette is a continuous loop and will print approximately 2 million characters before it needs replacement. The DMP 207 uses a ribbon cassette with a continuous nylon ink ribbon. In addition to the normal black ribbon, a color ribbon is available. Black Ribbon: Cat. No. 26-2824 Color Ribbon: Cat. No. 26-2826 Note: Other ribbon cassettes are available that fit in the DMP 207; do not use these. They will not produce satisfactory printing results and may damage the printhead. The use of re-inking kits is discouraged, for the ink does not meet the specifications for the 24-pin printhead of this printer. When it is time to change the ribbon, you will find the procedure is quick and easy. Follow these steps: 1. Turn off printer. 2. Remove the top cover as explained in Chapter 1. Be sure the printhead is cool before performing any procedures inside the printer. 3. Slide the printhead to the center. 4. Snap out the old ribbon cassette. Carefully follow the instructions for correct ribbon placement. Improper placement can cause smudged printing and may jam the ribbon. 5. Remove the new cassette from the packaging and position it over the printer opening with the ribbon knob aligned over the post protruding from the left end of the floor of the printer opening. 6. Lower the ribbon cassette into place and ensure that it is detented on both ends. 7. Slide the ribbon down into position between the printhead and the metal ribbon mask. This is easy to do! Do not try to make this step harder than it is by incorrectly forcing the ribbon between the ribbon mask and the ribbon guide (the black plate closest to the platen). 8. Advance the ribbon until there is no slack. The ribbon knob turns in only one direction, clockwise. An arrow on top of the cassette reminds you to turn it this way. 9. Slide the printhead right and left a few times to be sure that it moves smoothly without snagging the ribbon. 10. Reinstall the top cover. That's all there is to it. Your printer is ready to get back to work! Cleaning The printer cover keeps out most of the dust and dirt that accumulates in operating areas. However, it is still a good idea to periodically clean out paper dust and other stray particles that may find their way into your printer. Dusting the outside of the printer occasionally reduces the incidence of foreign matter in the printer opening. Note: If the DMP 207 is used heavily or in a dusty environment, consult your local Radio Shack store for advice on yearly cleaning and lubrication. 1. Turn off printer. 2. Wipe the outside of the printer with a lint-free cloth that has been moistened with a mild detergent solution. 3. Remove the top cover. Be sure the printhead is cool before performing any procedures inside the printer. 4. Snap out the ribbon cassette. 5. Use a soft brush to whisk paper lint and dust away from the area around the platen, printhead, and carriage shaft. Move the printhead from one side to the other to give you access to all areas. Take care not to damage any of the cables and pulleys. 6. Wipe the surface of the platen with a soft cloth dampened with ethyl alcohol. Rotate the platen with the paper feed knob (turning clockwise) in order to clean the entire surface. 7. Reinstall the ribbon cassette as described in the previous section. (ALL-06/28/94)
