Desert Viper (600-4132) Installation Faxback Doc. # 6786 ATTACHING THE TRANSMITTER'S ANTENNA To ensure consistent operation and maximum operating range, tightly screw the antenna's threaded end into the transmitter's antenna connector. INSTALLING THE VEHICLE'S ANTENNA TUBE The antenna tube holds up the antenna wire for the best reception and range. Route the antenna wire's loose end through the tube. Then insert the tube securely into the vehicle's tube holder. INSTALLING BATTERIES Cautions: Use only fresh batteries of the required size and type. Never leave dead or weak batteries in the transmitter or the vehicle. If you do not plan to use the vehicle for a week or more, remove and store the batteries. Do not mix old and new batteries. Dispose of batteries properly. Do not bury or burn them. In the Transmitter You need six AA batteries (Cat. No. 23-552 or 23-652)to power the transmitter. 1. Set the transmitter's ON/OFF switch to OFF. 2. Slide the battery compartment cover off in the direction of the arrow. 3. Install six fresh AA batteries, as indicated by the polarity symbols (+ and -) marked inside the compartment. 4. Replace the cover so it snaps into place. In the Vehicle You need four AA batteries (Cat. No. 23-552 or 23-652) in the vehicle, so it can receive signals. 1. Set the vehicle's ON/OFF switch to OFF. 2. Lift the tab on the battery compartment lid (located on the bottom of the vehicle) and slide the lid back. Then swing the lid back on its hinge. 3. Install four fresh AA batteries, as indicated by the polarity symbols (+ and -) marked inside the compartment. 4. Replace the cover so it snaps into place. Note: If the vehicle does not operate properly or if its range decreases, replace all four batteries. USING THE BATTERY PACK You need a 7.2-volt rechargeable battery pack (Cat. No. 23-230, not included) to power the vehicle. Before you use the battery pack, use the battery-pack charger (Cat. No. 23-241, not included) to charge it. Your local Radio Shack store sells the proper battery pack and charger. Cautions: When you disconnect the battery pack from the charger, do not pull on the connector's wires or you might damage the battery pack. Do not overcharge the battery pack. Doing so could damage it. After you recharge the battery pack (12 to 14 hours), disconnect it from the charger. Use only recommended battery pack and charger. Do not charge the battery pack while it is in the vehicle. Installing the Battery Pack 1. Set the vehicle's ON/OFF switch to OFF. 2. Lift the tab on the battery compartment lid and slide the lid back. Then swing the lid back on its hinge. 3. Place the battery pack between the battery compartment and the back of the vehicle. The battery pack's connector must be on the same side as the vehicle's matching connector. 4. Attach the battery pack's connector to the vehicle's connector. They fit together only one way. Also, be sure the wires do not touch the back tires. 5. Replace the lid. Notes: Ifthe vehicle loses power, recharge or replace the battery pack. At the end of the battery pack's useful life, it must be recycled or disposed of properly. Contact your local, county, or state hazardous waste management authorities for information on recycling or disposal programs in your area. Some options that might be available are: municipal curb-side collection, drop-off boxes at retailers, recycling collections centers, and mail-back programs. ADJUSTING THE TRIM LEVERS The neutral trim lever on the transmitter (next to the speed control) lets you fine-tune the speed control so the vehicle stops completely when you release the control. The steering trim lever (next to the steering control) lets you fine-tune the steering control so the vehicle goes straight when you release the control. Follow these steps to adjust the trim levers. 1. Place the vehicle on a box or a wooden block so the tires do not touch the ground. Note: To ensure a precise adjustment, do not touch the tires during the adjustment procedure. 2. Set the ON/OFF switches on the transmitter and the vehicle to ON. 3. If the tires rotate, adjust the neutral trim lever until the tires stop. If the front tires angle left or right, adjust the steering trim lever so they point directly forward. Note: You might have to readjust the steering trim lever after you use the vehicle a few times. (LB/all-08/17/94)
